You're not going to make 80k as a young teacher in AZ. Try like 40k.

If you want to live in a place like Tucson, though, why not find a regional BigLaw/MidLaw job and make 130k with lower COL, lower hours requirements, lower stress, fewer asshole partners, no working til 1am? Quitting to become a teacher who makes peanuts seems like an overcorrection.

Debt + downpayment on a good place + actually have something decent to bounce to. dont just quit and look for a job while unemplyed.

Thats the ideal, anyway. Balance the ideal against what you can handle. But the last part is the most important. You dont want to interview while unemployed. If you cant handle it, forget the debt and start looking now, but dont bounce unless you have something lined up.

you're never going to get debt repayment assuming you have an avg law grad amount (~150k if not more) and downpayment on a house in a major metro which is likely where you will be living if you're in biglaw (and getting a downpayment for some magical grass is greener house in flyover country that you've never been to isnt realistic either) unless you stay for years and years, and the people who do that don't bitch as 2nd years like OP. just get rid of the debt and as you come in those final months when the debt is almost gone start looking for other jobs. if you want to stay in law, then yes you need to be currently employed. if you want to leave law, it's okay to tell an interviewer you needed to unplug and reflect on what you want out of life

not everything goes according to some robot asian plan

Gov will give you low six figures, guaranteed security, good benefits, and low stress (except for some ausa/pd positions i guess). It isn't great pay but it's better than shit, esp. for 35 hours a week or whatever.

In-housemos also make decent $$ for the most part.

Gotta add the pension value. What's that worth, $1.25 million?
