2) There was a saying about the Maoist red guard that strikes me as deeply true when I observe these people up close - which is that any political movement which depends on large groups of young people for political support depends on them fighting against the sins of their parents / elders.

3) Political coalitions realigning in terms of values / morals in recent years more so than traditional alignment on economic etc interests. Jonathon Haidt discusses this - how there used to be rural democrats even during / right before Reagan era, there weren't as sharp lines along race / urban vs rural etc

4) Master-slave morality explains a good bit of these dynamics

This all makes sense - but there's still some missing cause I can't quite get my head around - which is how youngsters are indoctrinated into thinking how cool it is to be seen as a good person.... Where did this come from? I understand virtue signalling - it's important to a small degree that I myself think i'm a good person - but what's weird is the degree to which these people depend on external validation for thinking they are a good person.... Is it the decline of religious affiliation? They are segmenting into moral teams to satisfy a moral community itch religion used to scratch but now virtue signalling on twitter does?

I can see some of this stuff explaining society-wide trends, but I can't for the life of me get inside the head of any one individual of one of my friends who are like this and understand why anti-racism is so important to them.
