no oled have the darkest black levels using LCD tech, which is the brightest and most vivid generally.
so it's the best overall picture.
I've heard of dark "clipping" -- like no information in very dark grays -- but have no idea.
Also the preimium iphones are OLED and are much richer than the non-OLED.

i would look at craigslist. you don't have to worry too much because only i think 3 manufacuters make oled TVs and they are all good.
LG or Sony and maybe one more. If you get last year's model like this they are not really that much more at all.
https://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/ele/d/new-york-lg-tv-oled-55-b6p/7148474190.html
just turn it on and look for burn in--which apparently is very rare but has happened with pictures to prove it.

Unfortunate that Samsung quit the oled tv market.
They make their own phone oled screens and the screens for Apple.
If they continued large "mother glass" production maybe we'd have enough supply for desktop displays suitable for pcs.

Same.
The other thing is that unless you really do feel you need a new TV now, you might just want to wait. TVs are getting to be worse than cell phones in the sense that there'll be something massively better and cheaper available six months from now. And it's not like moving from a CRT to a plasma, the differences aren't that huge.
The last time I truly upgraded a TV was because my ex had a 32" LCD that was like 720p at most.

true but i could also buy a TCL roku tv for $300 refurbished and it is highly unlikely anyone in my family will notice the difference
i almost always end up spending the extra money for the better device. just an emotional response i think

I paid like $1900 for a new 65" LG E9. You should be able to find a C9 for about that or maybe slightly less. The differences are minimal (mostly speakers, the E9 has a glass frame, but otherwise same screen and chip). The B9 is cheaper still but uses an older chip. I'm a big fan overall and think this is probably the best deal in TVs right now.

Counterpoint: you can always add on/upgrade a soundbar/speakers, you can't upgrade the chip. You'll notice when you use any smart TV features or do updates or whatever. Everything is just slower on the slower chips. And like all tech, as more updates keep coming it'll get slower no matter what.
Also, personally not a fan of the soundbar approach. Get real speakers.
HOWEVER, to save money realize that there's a new series of TVs for 2020. Ignore those and get the 2019 series. There's no real benefit to the newer TVs.

Right. QLED is just the evolution of old tech. OLED is a totally new tech - no backlight at all and each pixel is individually lit. So blacks can be 100% (a perfectly black pixel is just turned off).

About to buy a new TV as well - and did a bunch of reading the other day and synthesizing all the info seemed to give impression that:
OLED is self-emissive so to speak, so individual pixel bulbs or w/e can individually turn on/off leading to better blacks. This is especially beneficial with darker viewing experiences (ie at night). Also can make a difference for action movies with "traces"
QLED seems a bit cheaper but better brights, however good tvs already seem bright enough and some of these i've seen at best buy seem like they'd burn holes in your retinas after a while (I think the brightness is a legit medical concern with qled....). But marginally cheaper and better for daytime viewing it seems
OLED is better for viewing angles
I'm waiting for a deal on the LG 65" OLED series then i'll pull the trigger.....
At least with TVs, they're actually improving significantly over time holding dollars constant - phones otoh seem to be exploding in price for features i either don't notice or just don't give af about, really makes no difference to me whether i have latest iphone or 2 gens previous...
TVs otoh.... Man I remember dropping over $3,000 on a 65 inch 1080p LG like 10-12 years ago.... Now $2,000 gets you an insanely good tv

i sold tvs from 2003-2008 and all the videos heads were jizzing in their pants about the prospect of oled tvs coming down the pipe. everyone agreed that plasma > lcd but oleds were the best of both. plasma got shortchanged because everyone was worried about "burn in" and lcds colors are more vibrant.
oled >>>>> lcd. there is no reason not to aside from cost.

OLED is drastically better, and worth it if you care about picture quality.
Only real downside to them is burn-in. I use mine as a PC monitor and it developed massive, massive amounts of burn-in. Generally seems tied to red/orange images so I took everything off my desktop with those colors, but it was too late. I don't care that much though, it's only overtly noticeable where there is a solid red image over the burned in area.

Which is why you should only get one for watch movies and stuff. Anything for sports or using it as a computer monitor is gonna cause burn in

How long did burn-in take to set in? I actually am typing on a laptop with a 15" 4k OLED display that I've had for 6 months and so far, so good. But I am planning on replacing my 43" with a 48" LG OLED when this finally dies and this kind of worries me.

I think I've had the TV for 4 years, maybe noticed small amounts at 1-2 years, about a year ago the areas where I had red/orange like a Firefox icon got really bad.
I suspect it does not take that much to burn these things in, because it's not like I left the thing on the desktop the whole time. The TV was usually off, and when on it was usually playing games or movies. I suspect any static image will do it over time, even if you "wash" it with other content in between. My recommendation is to rearrange the desktop regularly, keep any red/orange icons in a seperate folder off the desktop (hell, put all of your icons in a folder), use solid backgrounds, and any icons that you do keep on the desktop, leave them in the MIDDLE of the screen where what you are working on will cover them.
I suspect OLED burn-in is much worse than generally acknowledged on early generation TV models, and not widely reported because the people buying $4k+ TVs are home theater enthusiasts who baby them. I have a pioneer plasma that is over 10 years old and has no burn-in.

It's flame to the extent its deceptively named.
OLED = emissive tech, like each pixel is a light bulb you can turn on/off. True blacks because an off bulb gives off no light.
QLED = LCD display with a backlight that uses "QLED". They're still excellent TVs, but you cannot get a true black image on an LCD tv.

Insofar as it is compared to OLED, it is absolutely flame. It is just slightly improved LED. OLED is a totally different technology that is significantly better.
