It's so easy to take sides and sympathize with an emperor, his opponents, the soldiers in the field, the people, etc. But, in retrospect, the group I didn't understand until now were the well-off people who just stayed out of public life. They get almost no mention, but are a part of why Rome fell-- aristocrats just retired to their own estates, enjoyed life, and let the world unfold how it will. Even after the fall, their lives didn't change that much, they were just paying taxes to someone who was notionally a barbarian instead of a "legitimate" emperor.
Pretty much where I'm at. With $, I'll be fine no matter what. The clown world can burn, I'll enjoy the ride down. |
