it generally portrays the two sides as equally moral and heroic in fighting for what they believed was right. if u made this now, u'd have to portray the rebs as if you were portraying the nazis in a WW2 movie.
the humanization of individual rebs, whether the famous generals or anecdotes about random rank & file, could never be be made today. u cant have cute stories about stonewall jackson.
the general portrayal of lincoln as not gaf about slavery could never be done today.

The first wave was the deep south cotton states after 1860 election, fear of northern newspaper coverage after john brown incident etc, so seceded out of fear of action over slavery and so on.
The northern slave states on the border seceded and sided with the south b/c there were Northern armies marching through their state, and while may not have been fully on the side of the 1st wave, were absolutely not going to be conscripted into Lincoln's army to go South and fight their fellows.
From their PoV Lincoln forced this choice, and they sided with the cotton states once they had what were essentially foreign armies marching through their land. |
