because the idea of incarcerating someone for a term of years (or permanently) was not feasible financially. Dangerous people simply needed to be killed in order to protect society.
That long term incarceration is now virtually universally possible is the reason why the catholic church is now more formally opposes capital punishment. However, that’s misguided, as some third world societies may still lack the adequate means to incarcerate violent offenders for long periods of time.
