The boarding order line up should be arranged so that rows fill up one at a time from back to front, working from the windows in towards the aisle within each row so that people are never blocking or squeezing past each other. For airlines that have first or premium economy or whatever in front, this also lets VIP customers board LAST, which is actually a benefit over early boarding because sitting on airplane sucks.
Overhead bins should also be completely separated one-seat only compartments with assigned seat numbers, that fit the exact max size you're allowed to bring. |

The fastest way to board/exit is far enough spaced such that multiple people can stop and stow their overhead baggage at the same time. For example, window rows 24, 21, 18, 15, etc on one side of the plane, then the other, then next rows, then middle seats, etc.
That keeps the delay in the overall queue the smallest. SW’s random boarding is as close as airlines get to that efficiency. People space themselves out.
The worst way to board/exit is how everyone gets off of the plane ... front to back, everyone has to wait for one person in front to get into the aisle and pull down their bag. Then the next, while everyone else waits. |

Anyway, Southwest fucked up my ticket somehow. The system wouldn't recognize it. It took time for staff to sort it out, so I was last to board.
The only seat remaining was a middle seat next to a 400 lb. guy whose entire torso was forced violently against mine for 6 hours. My upper half was forced 30 degrees to the right for 6 fucking hours. When I finally got to Austin I was miserable and my head and body were radiating pain. I lost that night lying in bed in the hotel.
The purpose of business class on long flights is to save time in the future. When I can sit or sleep in a comfortable seat, I don't waste time later napping to make up for my poor sleep or drinking alcohol to salve my physical misery.
The idea that we need a "democratic" airline where everyone is approximately equally miserable is idiotic.

Maybe it's just me that I like the window and don't mind middle between 2 thins that much as long as the flight is under 3 hours. I have status and usually end up premium economy but for less frequent flyers SW is cr. |
