I've been really into film since I was seven years old. Most of my free time since then has been spent watching films of all sorts. I think it's important to rewatch certain films so you can absorb the different layers of meaning through it. For example; it was only on my fourth viewing of Stanley Krubruick's "The Shining" that I realized the movie was a metaphor for the creation of the Federal Reserve. I think that example alone stipulates how important it is to rewatch movies.

But how do you know if a director is good or if one of their films is better than another film? In my opinion, it would be the rewatchability of a movie. And it is for this reason that I sincerely believe Christopher Nolan is the greatest movie director of all time. Not only are his characters rich and the visual quality of his flicks top notch, but his plots are so complex and intricate that each movie requires multiple rewatchings, each one more enjoyable than the last! He totally saved the Batman franchise. I remember I spent all of my free time in Junior and Senior year of high school watching Memento over and over again. The movie has so much to say about memories and how they can go away.

Tonight I am going to watch Inception twice again. I still have a poor understanding of Inception. I started watching Inception in 2011 and it wasn't until 2015 that I could pin down all of the plots. But that's not all there is to understand. There are meanings to movies and sometimes professors call this a "subtext" even though it is film. This is the reason why I keep watching Inception--even if you understand the plot (hard, but possible with Christopher Nolan movies) you can't understand the meaning yet. And I

I won't touch Tenet until I am done with Inception.

It is for all of these reasons that I agree Christopher Nolan is the greatest director of all time, and I disagree with you if you don't.

you understand film theory but you don't under the film business. The Shining example would make sense if you were talking about the novel or if it were adapted into a play. Both are creators mediums. Film is collaborative and structured like a multi-million dollar business - not an art show. Sure, guys like kubrick and nolan have control and power - but they are not dictators. the studio and independent financiers provide notes from pre-pro through post. The screenplay is typically written by someone else and then rewritten throughout the shoot by dozens of other pay-by-week hired guns. The editors and DP also have a say (although very limited). the marketing folks get a say.

If you see a federal reserve element to the Shining it is not because Stan sat in some smoky back room and dreamt it up. Its because that is how a million random chips fell on the table and you interpreted it a certain way.

Maybe movies just aren't your thing. You seem like just a csual motion picture consumer. I'm a real cinephile. I rewatch movies because--especially for really good movies (like Christopher Nolan's films)--you need to do it to get the subtext (this means what meaning the author is trying to convey with the film even though it isn't a book) and there's no other way to do so. Maybe you have more important things to do like the law or truck driving or exploiting hookers like some of the other poasters here. But my passion is film because it is the most important thing to me, and I get to rewatch films. It's okay that you're less passionate. It just means my opinion is more informed, so Christopher Nolan is a Genius and the greatest director of all time soup to nuts. Automatic.

He's extremely talented and 90% of the hate he gets on xo is contrarianism: he makes films that have a blockbuster feel and budget, and that can be thoroughly (if not completely) enjoyed by ordinary moviegoers.

I hate to admit it, but I also feel like the broad appeal of Nolan's work cheapens it more than a little. All other things being equal, I and a lot of other ppl are far more apt to love, appreciate, and *defend* a film that we can recognize will bore a lot of people (Kubrick), confuse them (David Lynch), or, best of all, offend them (Todd Solondz).

I would agree. I have also watched Stanley Krubrurick movies and Dave Lynch and Todd Solondz movies multiple times. I think in totaly I have spent a week of my life rewatching different movies by these three directors. But I have spent months of my life rewatching Christopher Nolan movies because they have so much more to offer on repeat viewings. Some people prefer things to be open, but I like how Nolan is impenetrable in some ways and it can take over a decade to really "get" one of his films. Sometimes this is just do to Nolan capturing some aspect of the collective human zeitgeist that is only apparent years into the future. Todd Solondz for some reason makes movies I always watch completely naked but never have an erection while viewing and I fail to understand that.

explain something you can only gather from inception or the prestige upon, say, more than 3 viewings?

You clearly don't have the attitude of a genuine cinephile and I'm not going to engage with this ridiculous question.
