Really shows how fucked up our society is

Back in the day your job gave you meaning. It was a way that you showed value to your community. You were the village baker or blacksmith or tailor and helped out your fellow man and they helped you out

But now? You’re just a cog in a machine doing nothing of value to anyone just trying to accrue more currency so you can achieve escape velocity and get out of the machine altogether

What a fucking joke

So, what I take away from your post is "the modern work world is absurd and an abomination"

I think this so-called "FIRE movement" is only a reaction to that.

There are twelve people with jobs that give them meaning and they all graduated from Harvard in the 1970's. The rest of us are wagecucks in shitjobs.

That's the whole point. FIRE, then do something that you like and gives your life meaning. Did you think FIRE means achieve wealth then watch the paint dry?

People get hung up on the word “retire.”

Honestly, it’s a problematic acronym.

It’s also problematic from the standpoint that they would encourage you to strive and do a high paying job while saving as much as you can. It’d be much more efficient to just do something that suits you from the beginning and never retire. I know that’s a pipe dream and unrealistic for many, but I feel like working hard in a job you hate is off-message.

great thread but why are you criticizing the movement? it's just a response to the forces you're talking about.

it's not really about quitting, it's about creating quitting as a viable option as automation, immigration, offshoring, outsourcing, women/URMs, and the follies of job interviewers continue to converge to destroy the wagecuck economy.

it's not even about quitting per se as much as having the freedom to draw a line in the sand with wagecuck bosspricks when they ask for complete nonsense. our $5 million nest eggs arm us with the confidence to push back on unreasonable requests which makes us even better wagecucks in the grand scheme of things. and if you get fired you can tolerate a long resume gap without entering killself territory as you go to scores of job interviews for 1 or 5 or 7 years, as long as it takes.

I wish we lived an era that "starting a business" didn't require a 180 IQ or impossible risk tolerance or absurd luck. like Sam Walton's general store that cost him like $10k to start or the wright brothers just fixing bikes. my perspective on this is probably skewed as a low-IQ, high-income wagecuck, basically a rent-seeking parasite going from sinecure to sinecure. wish working for yourself were a more viable option though.

if there weren't an immigration glut it would be an insanely good time to start a plumbing business, millennials suck ass at manual labor/labor/trades.

The RE part and so on was all something that was pitched by bloggers in the last decade to help promote their blogs which were all saying the same thing. I think the Money Mustache Guy was the most prominent of these bloggers and he insisted that he was retired even though he was running all kinds of projects all over the place and traveling and giving talks and what not. He was very clearly an influencer type but didn’t want to cop to that as his career.

I had not heard he was divorced. When did that happen?

He’s damn rich though (off a blog telling people to live Spartan lives, ironically), so I doubt this really hurt his lifestyle much. Probably greatly improved his ex-wife’s lifestyle though.

Let’s see, I could get “meaning” from responding to “Where are we” emails and hearing bullshit about diversity and inclusion and anti racism for 40 years, or live a meaningless life answering to no one except myself?
