Every time I see a post either here or on r/IWantOut, by random individuals who (often by no fault of their own) have no real hope of escaping their countries of origin—I can’t help but think how shitty the world we’ve created is. I say this from a position of privilege, as someone who managed to “get out” (at least for the time being), who’s living abroad, in a country where I speak the language fluently—but who is nevertheless on borrowed time unless I marry a local or am somehow able to snag a coveted work visa.
This is a far cry from the reality of people who cross deserts on foot or brave open seas in rubber rafts in order to emigrate, but the problem is the same: Borders are fucking stupid. Especially because they only started to matter once the global north didn’t want to share what they plundered from the global south. Europeans spread all over the map, fucked up everything they touched, and then pulled up the ladders behind them.
Now, you have countries in Europe and places like the US freaking out about declining birth rates. “Who’s going to take care of aging Boomers?!” they moan. You know, I bet there are a lot of people who’d happily come take care of aging Boomers (bane of the modern era), in exchange for the opportunity to ensure their families’ wellbeing and improve their lot. I’m sure many people would love to offset the hand they were dealt when they were born in the wrong country.
But that opportunity shouldn’t be limited to people who are willing to come take care of old white folks. Young people the world over shouldn’t be doomed based on where the universe decided to spit them out. People should be able to go where they want to go, provided they can make their way in their destination country.
And the reality is that even if there were a small influx to richer countries, most people would probably stay where they are because being an immigrant is hard! But they should have the option
