If you go to gymnastics discussion forums like I did when the Games started, people seemed pretty convinced that US Gymnastics, which picks the team, took the wrong lesson from some 2010 competition and settled on a strategy of picking athletes who are inconsistent but can put up big numbers instead of picking athletes who are consistent but put up slightly lower numbers. Seems like gymnastics fans have been predicting this exact thing would happen, basically bc of coaching/management fuckups.
I haven't been watching US men's basketball, but NBA fans seem to think that the team is a bunch of prima donnas who want the ball all the time and there's no unselfish, role players |

But in a team competition, not being able to compete when a player has the yips is a leadership problem, not a player problem. If the US can't win a gold medal without Biles, you can't say that's Biles's fault. That's everyone BUT Biles's fault. |
