I think the middling IQs have a very healthy trust in society. They think doctors are very smart. They believe everything they see in their history textbook. They nod in agreement when Rachel Maddow or Hannity tells them the news and then backs it up with some stat.

Dumber and smarter people look at all of that with more skepticism. Evolution is a pretty good example on this. Most semi-smart people will just unquestionably say humans evolved from apes. Dumb people will look at it and say it is preposterous. Smart people will look at the evidence and realize it isn't really all that convincing...

The middle of the curve are scared rule followers who fear modest consequences to an enormous degree and will proselytize to others about the great importance of being compliant little cogs who somehow make the world better for their neighbors by doing as they’re told. This is essentially the root of middle class morality in today’s society. This is limited to the US, doubt it’s the same everywhere but I don’t really know.

Dumbs do this impulsively and reject rules because they are difficult for them, and they tend to reject mainstream values in the first place. Smarts are prone to take advantage of opportunities and have the ability to rationalize any bad behavior to themselves or see past social conformity as some kind of ridiculous virtue.
