Title: They should make a bootleg Genesis game where you travel back in time to 1994
Body: Before the colossal failures of the 32X, Saturn, and Dreamcast. Before that fateful battle in the mountains of the East of Afghanistan, and all of the consequences it held around drug use stateside. Basically the goal would be to extort political power from the Emperor (Akihito) such that Sega would gain status as a company and not have to play second or third fiddle. The N64, with its absence of Games (it had practically None, arguably) made for a huge opening in the Fifth Gen. That Sega failed to exploit this was a tremendous blunder whose consequences we are still paying for. The Genesis, for all of its hard-edged badassery, gave way to the Saturn, which had a softer, more effete, Intellectual touch. Really, a lot of the badass kids moved onto the N64 which was the province of wrestling games. If you could somehow displace the N64 and all of its blurry, scummy polygons with the rich, intellectual anime art of the Saturn, you do a lot to shape the tone of the gaming market and with it, society as a whole, not to mention Sega's future. Anyway, from a gameplay standpoint, the foundation would basically be an Earthworm Jim-esque platformer with badass guitar riffs and that smooth animation that only the Genesis could handle. Bosses, however, would be digitized like Mortal Kombat characters. There would also be minigames and a few RPG elements. It would still be mainly a side-scroller, but you'd do RPG stuff, like in Front Mission.
From a story standpoint, it would start off in 1989 when Hirohito's reign ended. Behind the scenes there was a historically-fictitious succession struggle, where the makers of each Console backed a particular candidate. Nintendo invested heavily in Akihito, Sega deferred as they were too weak at the time, and the other Console manufacturers were in disarray. With this, it was assured that the fourth gen would go to Nintendo and third parties would fall in line, in accordance with the bylaws written behind the scenes dictating third party publisher arrangements (this is how the economy works in Japan). The first Act of the story would end with a stealth mission where you spy on a meeting between the new emperor and Yamauchi and deliver the news to your contact in the Yakuza, only to find him dead. The second act would begin with the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog where behind the scenes, the Emperor was furious at Sega at their success wrought from marketing Badass games to westerners. This act Crescendos with the release of Mortal Kombat, which made the Japanese FURIOUS, where you fight a digitized boss resembling a Voltron or Power Ranger mech; also, you yourself are driving a mech. The battle takes place in caverns adjacent to Tokyo's disused pre-war Subway system that no one talks about or knows about. With the defeat of the Digitized Mech (with soundtrack composed by Tommy Tallarico, who is still alive btw), you would, through victory in this trial by combat, gain the respect of the emperor going into the Fifth Gen of game consoles. The Third Act would consist of behind-the-scenes espionage related to the Engineering of the Saturn. Because the Saturn was Engineered horribly with several processors, it was a POS from a hardware standpoint. It is possible that this was due to incompetent Engineering and thus that it would be prudent to kidnap Engineers from Sony or perhaps Panasonic. I know that it sounds like there are a lot of stealth levels but when you are dealing in historical fiction, you don't want too many big spectacles since it changes History too much. Anyway, the extent of the subterfuge makes the Emperor angry and he starts to favor Sony, as he did in our timeline. However, this could be evaded by using our newly-won clout to assure that the Nintendo Playstation would be released, causing Nintendo to get bogged down in having stupid af add-ons. Like all add-ons, it would have No Games, stymying the ambitions of its creators. By assuring that both parties would be forced to honor their agreement, Sega would keep its enemies occupied, assuring that it comes out on top. With Saturn Engineered properly, there would be nothing stopping Sega from Winning the Fifth Gen. The final boss of the third act would be Tom Kalinske, who would need to be dealt with if Sega would thrive in the fifth gen. His penchant for violent, badass games was tearing Sega asunder. The company needed one vision for the future and Tom wasn't it. He would have quite an impressive moveset and would be able to do Fatalities on you; also, if you die, there would be no continues, but you'd have a chance to give up and have a worse ending (similar to MGS). The fourth act would be the most important of all, where the critical Fifth Gen would be carried out. This act would have a lot of RPG elements where you go around securing deals with third parties. The final boss of the fourth act would be Shigeru Miyamoto, who, unfortunately, would need to be killed in order to prevent the release of Super Mario 64 and Zelda: OOT. He would basically have the same moveset as Liu Kang. The battle would take place in that level in Mortal Kombat with the spikes, and Miyamoto would be impaled on them. The fifth act would begin at the end of the fifth gen, in the year 2001, with Sega emerging victorious, with an array of both 2D and 3D exclusives, Nintendo in shambles, and Sony soured on the gaming industry as a whole. Our hero would begin the act in Lower Manhattan, in 2001, having infiltrated Urban Moving Systems. As part of a World Tendency system that would be at play the entire game, we would either be planting explosives at WTC7, or subverting attempts to do so. I know that this can be controversial so there are other ways we can go here. The point is that 9/11 was a critical event in gaming history due to how close it was to the launch of the Gamecube. I do think that the visual spectacle of this event and the timing of the release of the Fight Club DVD (and that ending) are intertwined. Remember, that DVD alone sold 10 million PS2s. The Urban Moving Systems levels would play similar to GTA1 or 2, which I think the Genesis can handle. You'd go around meeting with contacts, and everything would be incredibly vague and you wouldn't know who to trust. The events of 9/11 would occur in accordance with World Tendency and the outcome of various quests. The final boss of Act 5 would be Osama Bin Laden. The fight would be similar to the final boss of MGS3, except it would be Poppies blowing in the wind instead of Ornithogalums. Instead of The Boss discussing world events heretofore, Bin Laden would talk about his time in the CIA, and how he came up with Tom Calinske (plot twist), and how JRPGs were a sino-zionist plots to make western children weak and losery. He'd praise Sega for its work in making JRPGs less prominent while still having solid offerings with Phantasy Star and Shining Force. However, Bin Laden was a Nintendo sympathizer (as many of us know from his game library, where he logged tons of hours on Animal Crossing, not to mention that much of the software on the N64 fit with his vision of accelerationism in destroying the west), and thus, he would need to be destroyed. You fight a digitized Bin Laden with quite a formidable moveset. However, he would be greatly slowed down by the fact that he is on dialysis, leaving you the occasional opening for attack as he configures his dialysis machine. The soundtrack to this battle would be composed by Michiru Yamane. Discuss.

Title: I hit my intellectual peak playing Wachenroder
Body: Nothing I have done since that Summer of 1999 when I secured my copy of Wachenroder from a local game store dealing in illicit, gray-market software. At some point, when when manually translating the game, I believe I hit my scholarly peak. This was before the era of Screens and before multiple recessions combined with multiple streaming services basically turned Truth, Money, Justice, and Love into defunct, anachronistic concepts. I may have gone on later to do exceptionally well on the LSAT and ace OCI. I may have even gone on LATER to self-teach Engineering and specialize in System Design. I may, as a matter of fact, have a predilection for a particular fetish which I cannot get into, which I THINK a lot of Saturn owners have a penchant for, which is shown to correlate strongly with one's intellectual prowess. But it was in that summer of 1999 - that same summer of Blair Witch and Star Wars Episode I - that, when translating this game, and learning its battle systems and strategic elements (linearity notwithstanding) that I was closer to a state of intellectual eudaimonia than perhaps I have ever been, before or sense. My question is, do any of you share this experience? Does it have something to do with translating a game from its original language? With playing a game from a far-flung land, unmolested by the Ted Woolseys of the world, and "making it your own" through sheer brute-force translation? Again, I felt none of this playing any other video game. The Genesis and N64 games that I played were just violence orgies or platformers (or, like *shudder* Conker, both). Where else in gaming can one get his INTELLECTUAL rocks off like in a Saturn strategy RPG? Even on the Gamecube, the second most intellectual system, I felt none of this playing Baiten Katos or its sequel. Do I need to play it in its original language to have the type of experience which I am seeking?

This is based on an informal irl survey done on both instagram and group text. It's not a perfect scientific methodology, nor is it peer reviewed, but I have a significant number of data points. I assigned individuals to consoles based on their overall preference or by me assigning them to a console based on my experience heretofore or just based on how they kind of ARE. One person could be assigned to multiple consoles, it all depends on their console history. As for peer review, I am looking to you all - my peers - for review.

Title: Just got back from a local Smash tournament
Body: First of all, before you all jump on me, I am fully vaccinated, as was everyone - yes, EVERYONE - in attendance. Vaccination cards, as a matter of fact, were fastidiously gathered well in advance for all in attendance. Masks were also required. Really, the whole thing went off without a hitch. I don't know if getting less oxygen to the brain due to using masks was a factor, but you wouldn't know it based on the speed of the gameplay I was seeing. I was knocked out in the first round unfortunately haha, but that just allowed me time to realize, and fully comprehend, that everyone at this tournament was fully vaccinated. That we can get back to normal, and do the things that we love, if everyone gets vaccinated. Social distancing and Masks have their place, truth be told. But having all eligible adults (and soon, those under 12) vaccinated should be the utmost priority imo, whether we're talking about gaming tournaments, or the country as a whole.

Title: Why do people give the N64 such a hard time for using cartridges?
Body: First of all, I love the N64, particularly its wrestling and FPS games like Turok and Duke Nukem 64. But what I never understood is, why the hate for cartridges? The other 64 bit system of the 90s, the Jaguar, used cartridges — no hate. Other systems like the 3DO used CDs and failed miserably — were they praised for using CDs? It all feels like ex-post-facto rationalization to me. Square (and later, Square Pictures) did amazing things with FMVs, granted. But no one EXPECTED JRPG Firms to just become obsessed with FMVs. No one really saw it coming. FMVs heretofore had just been videos of stupid IRL stuff. Nobody expected Japanese artists to spend hundreds of thousands of man-hours modeling entire cities or Cannons or Weapons in advanced 3D and then film them for 10 second intervals.
And yeah, cool, Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko had video of a blonde chick on PS1, but nothing on N64. I guess the N64 version is inferior.
The other thing I don't get is, the PS1 and Saturn used cartridges. The Saturn had a cartridge slot for playing cartridges ffs. Both had memory card slots (memory CARTRIDGES, as it were. They played cartridges!). The games may have been cheaper, but you had to get memory cards, often 2+ (although this is a testament to the number of Games the PS1 had compared to the N64).
Anyway, I get it. We lost. Sony won, we should move on, and stop caring. But then I keep coming back to - who really cares about JRPGs and FMVs? Does anyone REALLY care about that stuff? Isn't Goldeneye more revolutionary and impactful, given how big FPSs are? But whenever I bring this up irl, one of my buddies is just like, "Stop. Just Stop. Goldeneye aged terribly, and Nintendo Lost. Accept it and move on. The PS1 shipped 100 million units. 100 million. Check. Fucking. Mate," and I just feel like a fool every time. Still, I just wonder if we are writing history based on how many Units are sold rather than, like, what happened irl?

Title: Just got back from an informal Halo Tournament
Body: Some buddies put together an informal Tournament recently and, being fully vaccinated, I thought, "what the hey?" I show up and there's NO vetting of vaccination status. NO ONE has to show their card. I'm the only one wearing a Mask. I think to myself, "what the fuck?" But then I figured, oh, we're friends, so we all trust that everyone is vaccinated. I mean, this is what I THOUGHT, since no one was wearing a mask. After a couple of rounds, someone brought up the pandemic, and one guy (let's call him Brayden) was saying that the Pandemic is "over" and that Delta is "a joke." I was like, "Yeah, if you've got Pfizer and Moderna on your side, and to a lesser extent J&J, it IS a joke," and then he was like, "yeah, ok, champ, haha." I was like, "you ARE vaccinated, right?" and he's like, "I am Young imo, I don't need that shit. Focus on the game, champ," things started to get heated at that time, he was wearing a flat-brimmed hat and I might've tipped it off his head, revealing his bald pate for all to see, but that's neither here nor there. I didn't want to get into a shoving match with someone who's unvaccinated (even though I, being vaccinated, would be protected from serious hospitalization, I could still spread the virus to people with compromised immune systems), sooooo I just stood back and asked anyone who's vaccinated to raise their hand. Like, 2 out of 12 guys raise their hands, not counting me. One guy raised his hand, but it was to flip me off. Needless to say, I was furious. I made for the door, but on my way out I let them have it:
"With the exception of two of you - Kyle and Kaleb - this is the most abject group of DEPLORABLES I have ever seen. Good night, and good luck at spreading disease that kills your loved ones.... UNEDUCATED SWINE!" and I slammed the door. It may have been harsh, but they deserve to be put in their place for being unvaccinated, and putting the rest of us at risk.

Topic: Some buddies and I had a Flight Sim party last weekend
Body: It was a surprisingly good time. Several of us are obsessed with Planes and love flying them and talking about them. It wasn't all that different from having a game on or what have you (we don't like watching Football atm since the mask requirements are often so lax and I believe that this is causing the virus to spread more, particularly at SEC games). Basically it was a 6-hour power hour flying an Airbus A380 from New York to London. Not a lot of scenery and it sounds long, but it's less than 2 football games in length (not that I'm watching football now, I don't know how long the games are nowadays). Anyway, I love the A380 and so did MOST of the guys in attendance.
As for Social Distancing/Masks/Vaccines, we all know each other socially and know that we are vaccinated. Masking was optional but as faux-passengers on a Plane, it felt proper for all of us to be masked. Wearing a mask the whole time made getting drunk a challenge, but we're talking about a 6 hour flight here haha.

Title: How to deal with the "No Games" aspersion
Body: I'm a single guy, own my own business, busy as hell, and at times, sure I like to unwind with my X and GamePass. I have a group of friends who are just.... they ALWAYS let me have it about the Xbox. "How's playing 15 year old Halo games, champ?" "How's that game where you fly Planes for 20 hours at a time?" "You re-enact 9/11 yet, champ?" "$120 a year for One Game," the list goes on. And on. And on. And it all gets tiresome. I have refutations for each and every one of these. I'm getting a ton of value of of GamePass. I enjoy flying Planes. Halo is still awesome. And still, they never let up.
I get that Infinite will be out soon, but they're just going to ridicule me all the more since it's "Halo," which is like a punchline to them. I don't get it tbh, we're talking about the console FPS that paved the way for gaming as we know it. The Killer App of the 6th gen (along with Halo 2). It, and the sequels it spawned, changed the face of gaming. I am a busy guy, and gaming is no longer my life, but GamePass more than provides me my fix. $120/year for GamePass is the bargain of this Gen imo. Discuss.

Title: Console Wars have Consequences
Body: With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, we can ascertain that despite how we joke about the inconsequentiality of Console Wars that they, in fact, have consequences.
Fifth Gen: Nintendo's victory in the Fourth Gen having thrown Sega into disarray, Tom Kalinske, boomer, was butting heads with azns in Sega of Japan, which threatened to tear the company asunder. As a result of this chaos, the Saturn was launched early af. Despite being a formidable console in both 2D and 3D, with many arcade-perfect ports, JRPGs, 3D games, and much, much more in its repertoire, it failed because Sega of Japan was rushed. tl;dr Console Wars have consequences.
Sixth Gen: As a result of Sega's loss in the Fifth Gen, they came at us for one more brush with greatness with the Dreamcast. Again, excellent ports of Arcade games. again, weird games that are awesome. And yet, a colossal failure, as a direct result of what went on in the Fifth Gen. Yes, everyone was waiting for the PS2 and wanted to watch DVDs such as Fight Club, but the REASON for that can directly be placed on Sega's Loss - and Nintendo's Pyrrhic Victory - in the Fourth Gen. Both Firms were utterly devastated after years of warfare, which allowed Sony to swoop in and grab market share, as each Firm was devastated and in disarray, each unable to properly Engineer hardware. Sega, with their multiple processors, Nintendo using cartridges like fools.
THE CONSEQUENCES FOR SEGA:
•Thousands of Sega Engineers, artists, salarymen and so forth thrown out on the street. No one would employ the Engineers because the Saturn was known for having rubbish hardware. The artists were typecast as the kind of who could only do the kind of 2D anime games that no one makes anymore, or drawing badass characters like Sonic (who btw is just Felix the Cat combined with Mickey Mouse), and thus struggled to find employment. The Salarymen were scorned for working for a disreputable company, known for exporting violent games to credulous westerners and dishonoring Japan in the process.
•No one will ever make truly, properly weird anime games or competent Sonic games ever again
•Tom Kalinske's finances were devastated after resigning from Sega in 1996 (really, he was fired for losing the console war).It was said that he was unable to make the mortgage payments on his home in Fairfield County, CT.
•Sega's franchises scattered around the Console landscape like FF6 characters in the World of Ruin. It was a complete mess. Crazy Taxi, Sonic, Super Monkey Ball, Shenmue all for sale to the lowest bidder. It was a disgrace what happened to those franchises.
THE CONSEQUENCES FOR NINTENDO:
•As a result of its loss in the sixth gen, Nintendo became known as a brand for losers. The N64 had a host of badass games, including the wrestling games, War Gods, and others. Nintendo basically cleaned up their image in the Gamecube gen, and became known from that gen onward as the console for, well, you know. Eventually, as a result of their grievous loss in the sixth gen (caused in part by its loss in the Fifth Gen), they would get out of the console market completely, choosing only to make handhelds that pose as consoles, i.e. the Switch.
THE CONSEQUENCES FOR SQUARE PICTURES:
•The above occurrences created a huge opportunity for Square, which was able to strike when the iron was hot, making scores of JRPGs, many of which had FMV cutscenes which shocked the world and brought Nintendo to its knees. As a result of their success, they grew arrogant and started a production company known infamously as Square Pictures. They would produce one film, featuring Alec Baldwin, James Woods, and well, others who would prefer not to be named. As a result of the disgraceful, ruinous box office performance, Square Pictures filed for bankruptcy, putting thousands of artists, producers, motion capture actors, and others out on the street. This also led directly to Square's merger with Enix, which resulted in an ongoing Century of Humiliation where their games were subpar (80 years to go).
THE CONSEQUENCES FOR AMERICA
•Honestly, this has been discussed at length in various top-notch threads on this board and others going way back.
My question at this point is, how can anyone — ANYONE — glibly chide that console wars are "pointless," or, "who cares?" when there are real-world consequences for gamers, employees, firms, and the landscape of gaming as a whole? The very games that are produced are a direct result of which consoles have triumphed or failed in the never-ending wars between consoles.

Body: Sooooooo you’re getting like $6k here? And you have to drive to the post office 30 times? I mean, if you need the money. I remember seeing a thread where you posted your height and income. Iirc you were tall, truly tall, perhaps the tallest poster on the Saturn board, bar none. But your income? Well….. nothing to write home about. And speaking of home, you’re in Oregon which has very, very high COL. Anyway, for someone with a borderline working class income? Yes, $6k is a lot of money. Are there other factors? Wife ridiculing you for having a Saturn? Is it that it’s Sega, or is she miffed about being associated with a console that lost its gen decisively? A lot of people don’t like Sega because of the brand’s association with wanton violence, blood, gore, and later its penchant for betraying its customers by losing the console wars so decisively.
Anyway, how good is emulation now for the Saturn? Are we allowed to discuss this haha

Body: You have all failed to realize the gravity of the news and the message that it sends. First — Sega games captured in a visible way for all to see, on the Switch Online menu! A Genesis console will be sitting there, next to the SNES and NES, like it's no big deal, like it has no identity or brand of its own. This represents a full and total capitulation of Sega's loss in the pivotal Fourth Gen. It is as though Sega is nothing but a Vassal Firm of Nintendo's. This is all very different from the manner in which Sega ported its franchises to the Gamecube and later consoles. It isn't even funny how ignominious this looks for Sega and I really feel for Naka, Kalinske and the rest. With the Genesis Mini, they could stand on their own and be proud of their game library, their Console, their Controller. But with this, it's as though Nintendo is wiping the Fourth Gen from memory and declaring a total victory.
This is fresh news and for many, it's still setting in. I get it. But you all need to come to realize what this all means.
Second, the N64, or rather its pairing with the Genesis. Two consoles that decisively lost their gens of the console war, particularly in Japan. And for both of them to come so late reflects how Nintendo feels about each console, and how they belong together. I think Nintendo is definitely sending us a message here. Nintendo, and really the Japanese people, do not have short memories, and this is proof positive. If you think that winning the gen was solace enough for, "Genesis does what NintenDON'T," you're sorely mistaken. Only Total Victory - now achieved - evens the score. In the West, the Genesis and N64 were working men's consoles with solid titles that salt-of-the-earth, simple men and children could enjoy. And here, they are disgraced in their pairing. Make no mistake, this was Nintendo sending a message. "You lost, Sega. Accept it." Frankly, I am livid and let's just say I WON'T be paying the surcharge for the upgraded online membership, thank you very much.

Topic: How did, "The Spirits Within," all but bankrupt Square?
Body:
Budget $137 million[6][7]
Box office $85.1 million[6]
Doesn't seem like a totally overwhelming loss. I know that "marketing" is often not included in the budgets for these things, but come on, they were selling JRPGs like you wouldn't believe. They sold, like, probably 30 million JRPGs in the PS1 gen alone. I have no idea what % of a game's price goes towards their revenue but if it's $20, they grossed $600,000,000+ from 1997-2000. And yes, they have their overhead, but we are in Japan here, amidst one of several lost decades, their salarymen were probably making like 30k USD in 2001 dollars. This would have been a very profitable company at the time so it boggles my mind how a modest loss at the box office would force them to merge with Enix. Is this just one of those things that you hear which people repeat that is, in fact, poorly-researched? It's often a challenge for westerners to get perspective on what's going on in Japan, as they regard us with suspicion, if not outright disdain. I've started to think that this was something that the internet just made up in the wild west era of the early 2000s (peak gamefaqs btw), and we all just continue to run with it.

Body: No. Just no. They had it right the first time, with both versions of The Lion King (if you're into that sort of the thing), and the ONE, count it, ONE Aladdin to rule them all. That was perfect, period. Full stop.
Forget the greed aspect, that was a perfectly curated collection of Disney classics. You had Aladdin, the surprise hit and perhaps the first good movie tie-in ever produced. It's obvious that whomever at NOA put that collection together put a lot of thought and care into it. They weren't putting out crap, they were putting out games that were worth the price they were charging. Games that held up that perhaps the public had forgotten about, which were brought back for all to enjoy. It was a great collection at an adequate price.
Aladdin for SNES? I don't care what they are charging, that game deserves to be locked up in the Disney vault. I get it, it's Capcom, it's a competent platformer, it's probably as good as The Magical Quest or any of their other contemporaneous games. But look at the games side-by-side. Someone posted a comparison of the magic carpet ride levels - Aladdin getting chased by a wave of lava on the Genesis in one of the most memorable, heart-pounding levels ever conceived vs on the SNES, riding around with Jasmine collecting... I don't even know what while "a Whole New World" plays on the SNES and literally no enemies attack you. Yeah, cool, I guess. And yes, SNES has a lava level but it's nothing in comparison. Long story short, Aladdin is riff-raff. He's a scoundrel. He's a bloody street-rat. Disney sanitizes this a bit but you get the picture. He's the type of character that just fits better on the Genesis from an image standpoint.

The Tokyo subway sarin attack was planned by Sega to save the Game Gear
The sarin gas attack that killed hundreds happened March 20, 1995. The same day Nintendo launched their Play It Loud series of Game Boys. These Game Boys were the exact same cheap hardware and black and white screen that have been releasing since 1989 & were even out of date back then. But the Game Boy consistently outsold & dominated the Game Gear which had a color screen. Sega's failed terror attack was an attempt to instill a psychological fear of the conservative views of Aum Shinrikyo and Nintendo and embrace the modernity of color gaming and chewing through 6 AA batteries in 90 minutes of gameplay.

Board: N64
Title: People GREATLY overestimate the number of N64 games
Body: A total of only 107 N64 games were released in the both the U.S. and Japan. 107! The 296 number gets thrown around a lot, but no single human being had access to that number by a long shot unless his family was making 3DO money and he could do imports (as well as hack a console with sterling piracy protection). And at that point, you may as well get the 3DO which would actually have fighting games such as Super Street Fight II Turbo.
Furthermore, it's simply shocking looking at the numbers just how many Western games were in the library for N64. Now, I like me some Western developers. Doom, Half-Life, Starcraft, Simcity, Crusader Kings, GTA5, the list goes on. But in the 90s? Whoa boy. I could list the Western-only games, but that list is just ghastly to look at. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Glover, or even Tonic Trouble or San Francisco Rush 2049. But when you get into the deep cuts, these games may as well not exist. "Bio F.R.E.A.K.S.," or "Armorines, Project S.W.A.R.M." They may as well call themselves, "This game S.U.C.K.S." haha. Anyway, when people insist that the N64 has, "no games," I don't get mad and insist that's 296. And although I don't appreciate the flippant disregard for titles like Body Harvest, or Excitebike, or No Mercy, I realize that what they are really saying is, "N64 had 100 games that were Japan exclusive and 100 GHASTLY games that were Western-exclusive. Basically it has 100 games, 10 good ones, 18 if you're charitable." I wish someone had told me this 23 years ago when I was still defending the N64 online (including Yamauchi's decision to use cartridges, where I have actually been vindicated it turns out).
Don't get me wrong, the Japanese have weird taste too. I wouldn't want to play dating sims or whatever else they had going n.

Topic: Is Gambit the same guy as Setzer?
Body: What's up guys, I'm a first time poster and had a question. I'm a big MCU guy, as well as an RPG guy, and I noticed an uncanny similarity between Gambit and Setzer in the sense that both like to throw cards at their enemies, and both have a devil-may-care attitude towards life (albeit Setzer was more reticent and resigned in the original Japanese. God I loathe what Woolsey did to that translation. That guy....)
Now you might say, "no big deal, there are lots of free spirits who enjoy gambling and throwing cards at their enemies. Further, you cannot compare the two franchises. Further, Setzer is not a mutant. Also, Gambit is Acadian, Setzer isn't." To that I have numerous retorts. First, Gambit came to join the X-Men after a time spent traveling the world, not unlike Setzer. He happened upon Storm, whom he rescued, just as Setzer rescued Celes from that ghastly Opera. You also have both wearing overcoats. To the last point, although Setzer's ethnicity is unknown, his aloofness, attitude towards women, the way he rubs elbows with the haute bourgeoisie like he's Ben Franklin in Paris, and the types of drinks he prefers in the Japanese version all point to French ancestry. So, I wonder if there wasn't at least some inspiration drawn. And I wonder what this would mean for Square-Enix if someone were to find out about this and pursue damages in civil court. I mean, HOW MANY carefree gamblers are there in fiction/anime/JRPGs who like to throw cards? Very few. Literally two. Do you really expect me to think that this is a coincidence?

Title: Could the N64 honestly do anything that the PS1 couldn't?
Body: I remember thinking that the PS1 was such a joke in 1995-96 because it had so few 3D games, no JRPGs, and was just a joke imho. There was some kind of engineering breakthrough in 1997 - one thing led to another and PS1 had competent 3D games. Something like Spyro 3 looking decent was hard to fathom at one point. FF9 would seem to be all but causing PS1 to redline which was probably a factor in its long load times.
I mean, sure I don't think there's anything on PS1 that measures up to Banjo-Kazooie or Perfect Dark. But the difference wasn't that vast. And PS1 graphics had an appeal of their own, for their sharpness and clarity, as well as their polygon count. And while the best looking N64 games are compelling in their own right, they are so few in number as to render them nonexistent. When people say that the N64 has, "no games," remember, they aren't saying that it literally has zero games. They are saying that it has so utterly few games as to, in effect, have no games.

Title: The Shockingly low sales figures of Gamecube
Body: The sales of the Gamecube (or lack thereof) are simply shocking. What did Nintendo DO in those days to turn fans away? How on Earth do you go from selling 33 million N64s to 22 million Gamecubes. I get that the N64 was a letdown for some people, and that a certain cohort of the fanbase was lured to the Xbox in particular. I understand the fans of the more kid-friendly games on N64 aging out of the Gamecube's library to some extent. But the sheer SCALE of these forces boggles the mind. That gamers could turn their nose up at a console with exclusives like Smash, Sunshine, Wind Waker, BK 1 & 2, Rogue Squadron 2 & 3, RE0, REmake, RE4, PSO 2 & 3, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Eternal Darkness, METROID MOTHER FUCKIN' PRIME, and arguably Star Fox Adventures. Or dreamcast orphans like Sonic Adventure 1&2.
It was cheaper than the competition. It had games (unlike the N64 which effectively had none imo). I mean, even as a second console. Do people not have second consoles? I know the Bush years were tough economically for the middle class because of his poorly-conceived economic policies, but I thought most people could afford a Cube post price drop if they wanted. Yet, few indulged, but why? Discuss.

You simply just have to look at the game libraries.
Partway through, Nintendo lowered the price of the GameCube because it was struggling. Being too similarly-priced against other consoles, while not offering the best or games is a major turn-off for many.
For most gamers at the time, the competition, mainly, PlayStation 2, was better. The same for Nintendo 64 vs. PlayStation.
Most people and children didn't buy more than one home console. So for them, your option was that you can either get a Nintendo console with its mediocre games library and poor third-party support (which many people were satisfied with, and that's fine), or get something else that had all the hits. PlayStation 2 had something for everyone and attracted people to it like a magnet.
The GameCube, much like every Nintendo console since the N64, missed out on a ton of great games from small, medium, and large companies every generation. Mlst of those companies skip supporting Nintendo altogether, never releasing a single game for many or all of Nintendo's home consoles and handhelds. You can't get excited about Squaresoft (after the buyout) finally returning to support the GameCube when all they released was Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and absolutely nothing else.
Nintendo consoles are well-known for getting table scraps from third-party companies or nothing at all, which made it easy for gamers to decide which console they'd want to buy.
- No Grand Theft Auto games, main Final Fantasy games, no Tekkens, no Silent Hills, no Kingdom Hearts games, no Dynasty/Samurai Warriors, no SmackDown games (which was the most popular wrestling series then), etc..
- Have you tried playing Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO with the GameCube controller? It's awful!
- Many gamers came from enjoying the success of the original PlayStation, and some are simply going where their favorite game franchises are going, like how people buy Nintendo consoles for Mario, Pokémon, and Zelda. For Xbox they have Forza, Halo, and now Bethesda games.
- With so many games missing, to many, it was a terrible system to own for most genres of games that pretty much covers what was and still are pretty popular to gamers then and now: rpgs, fighting games, shooters, survival horror, action, simulation games, music/rhythm games, etc..
- Even to this day, you'd often hear people say that they mostly buy Nintendo consoles for its first-party games. For the rest, those games alone aren't enough to compete with the thousands.... AND THOUSANDS of games released on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms. Being just a Nintendo-exclusive gamer meant you are being purposefully left out if you wanted more.
- It had weak and terrible online support (and still is). People want to play online, especially with friends and family.
- Often received incomplete games franchises (only got just the first two Burnout games, only NFL 2K3, only Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, only Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, only Mystic Heroes, only Hitman 2, etc.)
- Even small, niche titles, that aren't necessarily big sellers, made a difference. PlayStation 2 was the home to them, where they are largely absent on GameCube. While games like Devil Summoner, Shadow of Destiny, Disaster Report, or Fire Pro Wrestling Returns may not appeal to you or to the masses, but it was still available for anyone who wants to give it a try on PS2. Even Taiko Drum Master made its debut in North America on PS2.
- No CD or DVD support in the basic model worldwide. I never bought a standard DVD player and always used my consoles to play music and movies. For many, the PS2 was a very good multimedia machine, and made visits to Blockbuster Video and Hollywood Video that much more meaningful.

With the downward trend of low software and hardware sales, which leads to low third-party support, which leads back to low software and hardware sales, it isn't a shock to see Nintendo consoles sell as badly as they sometimes do. Also, the limitations Of Nintendo consoles, like using cartridges (more expensive and small capacity), GameCube's discs (smaller capacity), underpowered tech, poor online support, and more kept bigger games, publishers, developers away from their systems.

This doesn't mean that it's exclusive a Nintendo problem, but any company can do any number of things to lose support. No video game company is too big to fail. No one's invincible. Just look at how Microsoft plan bugged gamers when going from Xbox 360 to the Xbox One.

I’m not sure what point you’re making about a virus that’s on track to kill a million Americans (nearly all unvaccinated), but we have vaccines now. It is our responsibility as citizens to be vaccinated in accordance with CDC guidelines in the interest of public safety and maintaining the social contract. 2020 was a strange year, no doubt. I don’t blame you for taking some reckless risks, but we have vaccines now, and no tournament should allow any exceptions — all participants MUST be vaccinated, full stop.
