DRASTIC exposed the lab origins of COVID with 99% certainty in the last 24 hours. However DRASTIC is also a troubled org and it's really not appropriate for anyone to claim to speak on its behalf IMHO. Beware of news reports that mention this org. Beware of Alina Chen and Matt Ridley in particular.
Also notice that their last paper was published in May. That indicates that, for whatever reason, people who can write scientific papers no longer want to publish them through DRASTIC. |

The proposal is from 2018 and seeks $14mm to develop a virus with unique properties that COVID just happens to have. It also corroborates a shitload of circumstantial evidence that already made lab leak seem highly likely. If nothing else, it totally destroys the credibility of Peter Daszak, who had just announced on September 18 that he was going to Laos to find the natural repository of COVID. In the DARPA grant proposal, Daszak literally proposes to do research that was banned in 2014, so his "going to Laos" story looks like OJ looking for Nicole's killer. At the very least it's certainly devastating to proponents of natural origin theory. None of the Hopkins-affiliated spooks want to talk about DRASTIC, but they can't discuss natural origin without addressing it. So they're stuck today.
So in that sense DRASTIC is "correct" about lab leak. But not because the people running DRASTIC know what they're doing.
DRASTIC began as the brainchild of a very talented individual who, due to unfortunate circumstances, was unable to take a leadership role, and now has no formal affiliation with the group. Under his leadership, back in 2020 the group did some amazing work. The group continued to publish some very good articles on the science of COVID, not just lab origin theory, but I think the last time they published anything collaborative was in May 2021.
However, at some point in 2020 people began speaking on behalf DRASTIC without clearing it with the others, and no effort had been made to establish intellectual property rights over the name. I have reason to believe lawyers are looking into this. I know that they were looking into it at one time.
Separately, Chan and Ridley are promoting a book they wrote on this. Both are (or at least were) in close contact with DRASTIC early on, but it later turned out they were outright plagiarizing work by other members. They may still have allies in DRASTIC but I'm not sure who. As I said earlier, I want no association with DRASTIC, and while I suspect I've communicated with several of its members, I have not made any effort to confirm that and have no desire to. |
