technically they can challenge the religious claim itself, but it's a tough burden for them if the person presents a facially valid claim and they have no evidence the person is insincere.

Frequent covid testing and required masking of those kinds of employees who receive religious exemptions may be a sufficient accommodation to mitigate the direct threat--or it may not be. The science is all over the place.
