To be fair,

Prepared to drop an epic screed at any moment on how terrible and stupid and worthless "FSD beta" is? The chances that you own a Tesla with FSD beta enabled (or have driven someone else's Tesla with FSD beta enabled) approach zero. And I have literally never met a single self-described "Waymo" fan who has actually driven a "Waymo" -- not one single person.

Don't know how to explain it, but it's the damndest thing.

To be fair,

If you can't afford to buy a ~$40k car that will save you substantial money on gas and maintenance for years to come compared to whatever old ICE you're currently driving, you're not "Middle Class atm".

The average Prius driven to the end of it's useful safe life will get you 250 maybe 300 not 500.

But comparing the cost of a new Tesla to a heavily used Prius is stupid anyway

not given the premise above

and yes, you can easily get a Prius to 500k with a cheap aftermarket battery replacement which still makes it ridiculously cheaper to operate than a Tesla

if you're actually interested in saving money, buying a Tesla is not the "smart choice." it's smarter than many regular cars, sure.

To be fair,

It will absolutely save you money on maintenance, especially if you're planning to drive Prius all the way up to 500,000 miles. Or do you think Priuses -- which still have engines filled with a ton of moving mechanical parts (unlike, say, a Tesla) -- magically don't require increasing levels of maintenance after a certain point simply because they are good, reliable, and economical cars?

Gas is more questionable, but anyone telling you it "definitely" won't cost more to fill up a Prius than to charge a Tesla in ~2028 is full of fucking shit because no one actually knows what gas prices will look like that far out. Why don't you use that crystal ball to give us a dead to rights promise on whether SOL will have a bigger market cap than ETH in 3 years, too, while you're at it?

Prius engines don’t die with any regularity. They run a lot less and less hard than other vehicles and they are Toyota. Sure there is maintenance and gas costs, and maybe some part here or there, but they are very inexpensive to run. The parts are also very reasonable. In fact, one defective Tesla door handle (which seemed to be a common issue) would put tires, brakes and service on a Prius.

To be fair,

I am not a Prius Masterman, but if you're telling me that operating a 10+ year old Prius with 400,000 miles on it as a daily beater for a year has a lower expected maintenance cost than operating a brand new Tesla as a daily beater for a year, I call bullshit. Gonna need to see THE SCIENCE and hear from THE EXPERTS on that.

Not true. My cousin got a Tesla 3 DM a few months ago for his work commute (got the HOV sticker) and hates it. He's had them work on it several times for various issues, ie, passenger window button was fucked up. It's loud at high speed and there's random shit rattling around. When he gets home he's stuck for at least an hour to charge it up. It does accelerate pretty fast though.

I took a ride in a Tesla. It was funny because I couldn't figure out how to open the doors from inside or outside.

It was a very pleasant ride. The thing that nagged me though was like, how clean and smooth it is. You'll never get that diesel smell or fumes like on the race track. I can't imagine NASCAR with electric cars. But maybe engines that roll coal will just be restricted to racing or recreationally in the future. The future is definitely electric.

https://www.tesla.com/blog/introducing-tesla-insurance

You only think that because the media loves to report on any crash involving a Tesla which makes them seem "unsafe", when in reality Model 3's are actually the statistically safest cars ever tested according to NHTSA.

(PS: The increased real world FSD driving data that Tesla will get out of this approach on the back end -- which is the single most important resource for continuing to refine the FSD software -- is worth its weight in gold, and is yet another example of how Elon is genuinely great at leveraging the Tesla brand and the brand loyalty it inspires to create smart synergies. But I'm sure someone who definitely owns and loves driving a "Waymo" and isn't even slightly mad that they were never dumb enough to buy into the hype and pick up some Tesla stock will come in here shortly to explain that this is just a scam for gullible retards, it's a terrible deal, Tesla is going to zero soon, etc.)

Collision coverage is almost definitely higher for Tesla than a comparably priced sedan. Aluminum unibody frame is lightweight but very expensive to repair. Like 4-5x more for the same low impact collision.

I don’t like Teslas, but that’s silly. You are a slave to refueling ICE cars every 400-500 miles. If you are a normal commuter who drives 20-30 miles to work and back every day plus some 2 hour trips on the weekend, a Tesla is fine and if you install a charger in your garage, I bet you would think about charge way less than you would think about gas in a comparable ICE car. (And no worries about stopping at a dangerous gas station where you might be mugged/carjacked.)
