didn’t read the book. why did the emperor go through the process of taking Arrakis from the Harkkonen, then give it to Atreides only to turn around and help the Harkkonen fuck up the Atreides and allow them to take the planet again? if he wanted to fuck up the Atreides, why not just have at it. why this complicated process?

i am guessing it is because this is intended to isolate Harkkonen too. two birds with one stone, but it isn’t really clear.

yeha, i am a retard for not getting it. whatever

yeah, it weakened the Harkonnen, they went into debt from the coup to take back Arrakis.

Also, invading the Atreides' homeworld wouldn't have been as effective as taking them on on a new planet where they weren't really established yet.

i think it was because he saw Atreides as a political threat to him, but he couldn't just attack them without cause or there'd be backlash in the empire. so, he had to do it behind-the-scenes and make it look more like McCoys and Hatfields squabbling while he remained above it all.

yeah, for sure. in fact, this is a big plot point–the other houses can't find out that the emperor was involved.

just use the encyclopedia to look up stuff. it will provide the necessary context. the movie doesn't do enough to explain the back story of the space witch concubines, which is very interesting - esp. the queen's past with Baron Harkonnen

Yeah and Arrakis was basically a kill zone. No place for survivors of the attack to go without soon perishing. No locals to help, for all the enemies knew.

Caladan, otoh, probably had ample defenses that couldn’t be sabotaged so easily, and survivors of the attack could scream bloody murder about the Emperor’s involvement

briefly alluded to in the movie, baron vladimir harkkonnen says to rabban, "the atreides' voice is rising, and the emperor is a jealous man."

the emperor could not directly attack house atreides because of the support of the other houses. a bloc was forming against the emperor. an exchange between paul and liet kynes:

"you know what the great houses fear most, dr. kynes? exactly what has happened to us here. the sardaukar coming and picking them off one by one. only together can they stand a chance against the imperium."

this is what the emperor feared the most so he installed house atreides on arrakis and then secretly backed the harkkonen with 3 battalions of sardaukar to wipe out house atreides in a sneak attack.

Imperial politics was sort of a first among equals thing even though House Corrino had ruled for a long time. The noble house sin the Landsraad would not have accepted open aggression by the Emperor against a respected noble house like Atreides.

I always viewed the Landsraad as like the Imperial Diet for a Holy Roman Empire that ran on top of oil
