-you still pay taxes on gains from SECURITIES. Most articles do not mention this. You likely want to hang out in a no-tax country for a while first so you can wash trade everything and up your basis. You can avoid this by trading through a corporation . . .but -you can't just send yourself "foreign source" dividends from any old foreign corporation, like say the Cayman islands, because of controlled foreign corporation rules. I've been told something inside the EU (like Malta) could work as a low tax option to get around CFC but I don't exactly understand why CFC rules wouldn't apply. -you actually have to make the corporate income foreign source, which means somehow having all management and control outside of Portugal even though you're actually working in Portugal -failing that, let's say you decide to opt for the 20% flat tax rate and concede you'll be paying some taxes. Look at their astronomical social security taxes. Your total rate could equal or exceed the US -ive heard of Portuguese accountants giving conflicting advice on how all of this works. You want to make sure your setup is vetted by someone who knows what they're doing BEFORE u are in Portugal |
