a lot of people watched the '39 world's fair on TV, but mostly at businesses that owned TV sets, not on their own personal sets.

To be fair televisions in the 1930s were miraculous wondermachines which boggled the depression era mind and were the subject of familial awe and adoration for anyone lucky enough to afford them. Of course they were worth 10k in 1930. It's hard to think of a comparable tech in 2021 this side of a trip to low earth orbit.

i saw a photograph of Walt Disney's office from the late 30s and i remember thinking how striking it was that it incorporated almost all of the comforts of a contemporary office. he had air conditioning, tv set, multiline telephone with elaborate intercom systems. you wouldn't have felt that out of place in his office, except for lack of computer/smartphone screens.

some technology is surprisingly old. push-button telephones (as opposed to the old rotary dial ones) reached the mass-production stage by the 1940's. the first pager systems (using radio beacons) were installed in the 1950's.

there has been a lot of scholarship done showing that the NYC subway used to take less time to say, get across the East River from Brooklyn to Manhattan, etc before the MTA took over and the unions ruined everything. The lines also used to be higher capacity. Look up a guy named ((Alon Levy)) on twitter

here's a 1939 bloomingdale's ad citing the price of their TVs at "$435 to $540.":

https://test.desu-usergeneratedcontent.xyz/his/image/1637/90/1637902846013.jpg

inflation-adjusted, that would be $8,655.84 to $10,745.18 today. BUT - as you can see on the ad, there WAS a cheaper budget option - the andrea corporation, which sold kits to make these little tiny-screen TV sets:

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/51/33/92/513392799b3e24cf3fe20f1bcd6edf06.jpg

the 'build it yourself' kit for one of these was $79.95 ($1,590.88) or pre-built for $189.50 ($3,770.76). what a bargain.

here are the big beefy du mont TVs that sold for $500+ back then:

https://www.earlytelevision.org/images/dumont_183-hd.jpg

you can see the full stereo underneath the screen.

LJL @ the kit. Men used to be able to build a TV from parts with their bare hands. Now?

also, it looks like the andrea TV kit and the vacuum tubes were sold separately. that's partly because a lot of guys back then already had vacuum tubes laying around from other projects, and didn't want the price of the tubes bundled into their build-a-TV kits.

here is a 1940s TV commercial for Dumont television sets.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfP04Mbe9_E

interesting how modern the setup of the commercial feels. apart from the grainy B&W image, these are advertising tropes which are still familiar in 2021: the pocket-protector wearing 'nerd' reading off a list of 'tech specs' to the hammily played 'skeptic'/potential buyer, w/ some slackjawed buffoon as comic relief.

this could be a commercial for some e-widget in 2021, only the 'know-it-all' would be his smartass daughter or a mulatto, never a white male.

i used to have a whole bookmarks folder filled with 70s office interior pics.

once in a while you will still come across an old office building that hasn't really been renovated since the early 80s, and if you squint, it still looks like the 70s.

i used to grill my boomer father about life in the 70s because i was really fascinated by them for some reason when i was a kid. they just seemed so strange and interesting.

i was disappointed that my father had a very negative opinion of the period. he said it basically sucked, but the popular music was good.
