Both of my parents were doctors, so I picked up a lot of medical knowledge just from them. I had no desire to inherit their miserable lifestyles though, so I took a totally different track in college and focused on philosophy and history and all that junk, with no plan.
After college I went to grad school to get some worthless masters, but I ended up taking some introductory statistics class and liking it. That's how I met the person who would go on to become my PhD advisor.
My PhD advisor really wanted to me to learn as much statistics as possible so that I could make maps. I made really good maps and that got me some outside work that involved a lot of international travel.
When you travel internationally you spend a lot of time being bored. To cure that I read books. To get english language books, you have to find a bookstore that buys and sells used books from foreigners. When I would get to these stores, all the popular titles were already gone, so I was stuck reading books like this:

My access to news about current events was sometimes very limited too. The only way to learn about current events the countries I was in was to read magazines like the Economist, Far Eastern Economic Review, that sort of thing. There was never a time when I was reading NYT or any American bullshit.
This continued for several years until, for a multitude of reasons, I ditched grad school and went to lol school. I took the LSAT without any prep aside from taking some practice tests. Never did Testmasters or Kaplan or even bought those books except for a book on logic games. I just used by knowledge of statistics to eliminate wrong answers and I got a high score.
My understanding of deep state is born from over 20 years of experience interacting with people in the military and intelligence communities. These people are highly plugged into international academic networks for what should be obvious reasons. But you also find that at lol schools (the good ones at least), and of course in government itself.
