Where else can a homeless person seek heat at night besides a homeless shelter?
Ok…don’t freak out but a space blanket in a cemetery is a good idea. Nobody likes cemeteries but they are usually unoccupied by the living for that reason. I have parked at cemeteries and lit those tealight candles in my car. I have actually stayed warm by putting a few on the dash and with the condensation, it seems to warm up the place. You must be careful not to start anything on fire! I also close off the front or back with curtains, pre made for such purposes. One time I was at Grateful Dead Show and lost all my gear that I hid in a parking garage. So I was cold and alone and the bars are closed and I run into some street people. We start moving to stay warm. They show me those places with vents that blow the hot air and that was a nice tip. Alas, the cops are always making us move. So I ask the street people where a cemetery is. You’d be surprised how frightened people are of these places. But we had to climb a wall to get in but with the space blanket that I had in my small pack, it was ok. You need these on you at all times….1) ID 2) matches or a lighter 3) warm clothes, socks and a hat 4) some one dollar bills 5) cell phone. 6) space blanket! ….Not great but better than nothing. Meanwhile, there are the all night bus and train stations. Try to have some money on you, and be like a tourist. Abandoned bleachers and the penalty box at an ice rink are also nice shelters. I also travel with a poncho made of thick material my Mom gave me about 30 years ago. It is the warmest thing imaginable and can ward of the cold and suffice as emergency blanket, tent, and cover. Small tarps are also very warm as an outer shelter. Another tip, good socks and a hat…. always. The next morning it was still cold and the street people showed me another way to stay warm. To ask other people for help. People are amazing and will give you something to keep you warm instead of money. Just ask. I was given a jacket with a liner, a blanket, a cup of hot soup, and a hot chocolate. I never found my gear but when I got home a few days later, it was there. Some Dead Head had sent it to my address that was written in my address book!
