After UG it was jarring going back to the midwest and realizing there were a lot more jews than I ever knew. |

it's weird to consider how much shit i did as a kid would now be considering a hate crime with the potential of making national news. |

Just the lighthearted ragging (albeit while using explicit racist and bigoted slurs) on gays, jews, girls, blacks, etc. was pretty constant in HS in the 90's. But it was done almost ironically and without any hate in our hearts. And it went both ways. I think beta dudes (non-athletes) will never understand how that kind of niggling in locker (and release) rooms breaks down walls, brings different people together and builds lasting bonds. When you grow up in a Jewish area and you're not, you notice you got off school for Jewish holidays, you see the synagogues, the JCCs. You're aware of it. By 13, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah circuit is in full swing. It sounds like you grew up in some prole-but-on-the-up area that has a small Jewish community with like two kids you found out were Jewish and surprised about it.
