A less touched on theme from the parable is Dostoyevsky's pessimism towards the more rigid legalism and long standing draping of temporal duty of the Catholic church vs the more purely spiritually based and esoteric thrust of the EO traditions
The idea that the Catholic church, as an arm of Christianity, would persecute the religion's namesake is a powerful one and one that rings with an uncomfortable fidelity in the rise of the more farcical strains of "trad cath" belief as well as with the general atmosphere of corruption surrounding the church scandals that saw Pope Benedict XVI removed from power
