I was so fucking close to doing philosophy and wanting to become a professor. Somehow I snapped myself out of it after realizing how few positions there even are and the likelihood of getting such a thing is pretty small with no connections

Teaching law would be chill as fuk. They get paid pretty well

and do literally nothing.

Academics in liberal arts are constantly having to teach, publish, fight with kikes on twitter, go to conferences, etc.

Publishing is one of the better parts of the trade, people stroke your ego and take your IMPORTANT IDEAS seriously. Writing lectures is pretty fun too, but grading absolutely blows.

Also dealing with other faculty, who are all hysterical women, whether or not they have a penis.

compared to what other profession, for the average law student applicant? i feel like for men thinking about going to grad school in non-STEM, law school is almost always the better choice (the downsides of the practice, notwithstanding)

It's okay to go for it if:

- You intend to be part of a childless dual-income couple

- You are willing to live anywhere

- You are willing accept the very likely failure scenario, wherein you earn a living as a freelance writer and take adjunct gigs so as not to feel like it was all a waste. (When you go in to teach, you'll hang your head low as you shuffle past the tenured faculty who made it and hardly notice you.)

OTOH, you have to be completely brain-dead and disfigured by fire to be unable to land adjunct work, so if your dream is just to teach the subject -- whatever the sacrifice might be -- then go for it.

it probably wasn't what you intended when you wrote this post, but you just brilliantly explained why the academy at all levels has fallen to libs. only libs would demean themselves and ruin their futures like this. sane people would make a more rational cost-benefit analysis

Lol. I wasn't thinking this at the time, but it had occurred to me -- especially wrt point 1

There are still some non-shitlib academics, but they usually have personality disorders that make most alternatives to academia tough roads

I daresay most people who passed through the liberal arts had fantasies of being a professor someday. I did, sometimes it was economics, sometimes archeology, sometimes history, but regardless of the subject I'd always be that cool if somewhat distant professor who brought his dog to the office and travelled frequently to exotic destinations for digs or talks and published award winning books every year. And lived in a restored farmhouse with a summer house on an island off the coast of Maine or Massachusetts. And collected something. And it was always at an Ivy, or if not an Ivy then Amherst or Bowdoin. There was probably even a pipe somewhere in that fantasy.

Thankfully reality got in the way. I did have a fair number of friends who tried to chase after this elusive golden goal. I know of two who did land places at prestigious schools but whenever I talk to them it's clear they live in a world that is now little more than perpetually walking on ideology eggshells, afraid of their students and afraid of the administration. I can't imagine the psychological impact of being in the elite ivory towers these days.

The happiest are those who landed at big state universities. More laid back. More chill. Living a pretty good life in Bloomington or Knoxville or Athens.

Then there were the failures. Flamed out of PhD programs, or if lucky, teaching at a minor school somewhere still making sub 80k and teaching to thick kids who couldn't care less. A few tried desperately to stay anywhere around the tri-state and turned down actual offers from regional state schools elsewhere and never made it more than the adjunct track or doing something like teaching writing at Columbia and living off family money.

Some of the flamed out or failed PhDs actually managed to get a federal gig and are GS 13-14-15, so not too bad. But definitely not academia.

Probably the saddest was someone who turned down tenure track at Vanderbilt (in music!) for a gig at a music school that was offered with the promise it would become permanent once the assured funding came through in a year or so. It never did. And now she's a perpetual adjuct of some kind, working in a admin role while teaching a class a semester. Just to think she could have been a tenured full professor at Vanderbilt by now!

Damn, that's devastating. To be fair, if it were some place like Eastman or Peabody, I can understand why she went for two birds in the bush instead of the one in her hand.

I can imagine it must have been devastating. I knew from other sources she was a very good instructor and engaged. It was bureaucratic fuckups that screwed her.
