"Fuck you sell it to me for this."

But seriously, if you have a trade in, dont tell the salesman until you've reached his lowest price. I know a car salesman and he says he fucking hates this tactic.

with the price of used cars right now, you probably want to be talking about your trade in right away. this is a big incentive for them to take a loss on the new car. ordinarily your advice can often be tcr.

Costco + under a nearby but non-urban zip code to find a dealer. We got my wife's Lexus in Monterrey instead of the Bay Area and that region had way better incentives.

However, with demand so high a lot of dealers are opting out of Costco since they don't need the leads. In that case, I'd suggest asking for internet sales + ordering your car; best chance at invoice + $ pricing.

i've heard mixed things about this. at least it gets you in the door for negotiating at a low price. i've heard of people getting better deals than the "costco deal" by comparing other dealers.

basically, just don't go with it blindly. use it has a jumping off point for negotiation. go to other dealers with the costco price and see if the can beat it.

you're rarely, if ever, getting a better deal that costco. we asked the sales guy (who looked massively dejected) if in the future it's better to contact him directly or buy again from costco...he just shrugged and said he can't do better. he admitted costco was a loss leader to get people in for financing / add-ons / service; none of which we bought or would do since we're from out of the area.

I buy used cars directly from owners. The sellers will do all kinds of hilarious shit to try to cheat you, so you have to have a strong stomach and zero emotion about the process. I find a car that I like, on Criagslist or just on the side of the road, call the seller and do a test drive. Then, and this is the part that gets most people, I have a nearby mechanic check the car out (after making sure the seller and the mechanic don't know each other). I try to get the mechanic to put his findings in writing or tell me in the presence of a witness, so that he's essentially giving me a warranty if he says the car is in good working order.

But usually the car is not in good working order and the seller's deception will be hilariously exposed while he's standing there at the mechanic's shop. I usually have to look at 3 or 4 cars before I find one that works right. But I've been able to get some very reliable, very cheap used cars. My current car was 3 grand.

All kinds of shit. A frame that got broken in a wreck and welded back together. Cylinders that don't fire. A dying catalytic convertor. One guy was trying to sell me a car with a busted air compressor. During the test drive, I noticed that the air conditioning was blowing really cold. I thought it was the car for me. But then the mechanic explained that this guy had poured in a new can of freon right before I got there, so that it would blow cold for an hour or so, until the freon trickled out. According to the mechanic, this is a commmon trick in the Mexican community (which the seller was part of).

cash from a private seller is definitely TCR if you can go that route.

but very easy for the average xo lawyer to get FUCKED this way. only do this if you have a TRUSTED mechanic you are sure will give you a thorough inspection. might even be worth buying one of those fake and gay extended warranties with the money you'll save not going through a dealership.

Honestly if you know enough about cars to notice the transmission slipping, know what coolant in the crankcase looks like, etc. the best way is to evaluate the seller as much as the car itself. If the seller is UMC they likely didn't skimp on maintaining the vehicle. If prole, walk away.

likely tcr. however, i've also sold a couple complete lemons to dealers (couldn't do this to a private guy) by duct taping the problem so it wouldn't be noticed.

likely tcr with umc guys that look trustworthy. still, there could always be problems they are hiding that are not easily noticeable. i used to be a big car guy, but even now with modern cars i wouldn't know wtf is going on half the time.

it's a gamble. but yeah, finding some 2 year old car with no miles being sold private by a dude that doesn't look like he absolutely needs the money is unlikely to bite you in the ass. a big part of the used car business is buying from these guys and flipping on lots for a profit. my dad used to do this as a side hustle and made money all the time.

that also means good deals don't last long. if you find a good deal, go out with cash in hand. say "let's do it right now for -10% what you listed". lots of guys, especially if they're monied, will be like "ok whatever".

There’s not as much room to negotiate these days with the chip shortage. Find all the dealers within a 100 mile radius that sell whatever you want. Email them and ask for best price out the door. Then take the lowest and see if you can get the others to beat it. Repeat until you can’t go any lower. There is also a subreddit called askcarsales or something like that where you can get manufacturer-specific advice and people will tell you whether a deal is reasonable. Get your own financing unless the manufacturer is offering some kind of ridiculously low rate that you can’t get elsewhere. Generally you should not pay for extended warranty, gap insurance, prepaid service plans or any of that bullshit. Don’t haggle with the dealer over your trade-in. Sell it to carmax or carvana or another similar company. They are actually paying pretty good money these days because of the chip shortage increasing the demand for used cars.

you want to use financing and your trade in as negotiating tools. the dealer makes money off of financing. in fact, a lot of times this is the primary way they make money. you want to come in with your own financing so you can negotiate against what they're offering. they might give you a better price on the car to use their financing. i've heard stories of dudes doings this and than immediately paying the car off, and the dealer calling him and threatening to sue (it was perfectly legal for him to do this, dealer just got fucked).

same thing with trade in. dealers need used cars BIGLY right now. you want to use this as leverage to get a better price on your new car. let them know you're happy to sell private or to carvana or whatever. come in with quotes from those services.

I don’t see how your advice on financing is inconsistent with what I said.

If you want to use quotes from Carmax or Carvana to try and negotiate something better with a dealer then that’s fine.

The problem with what you’re proposing is that you will spend an inordinate amount of time sitting in the dealership where they make you play a waiting game while you negotiate all three pieces (car price, financing, trade-in). Then you have to repeat the process with other dealers to make sure you get the best deal. Nobody has time for that shit.

it's definitely a CBA analysis to decide how much time you're willing to out-kike a dealer versus how much you'll save.

fortunately we're in the world of email. it's incumbent on you to not have the salesman waste your time. you have to willing to put a stop to their salesman bullshit and say "look, send me your best offer, here's my card" and walk out.

it doesn't really take that much time. just take the reins and don't get involved in their tactics.

i find this enjoyable so to me it's not really something i mind spending time on.

right now: YOU'RE FUCKED. helped shitlib ex buy a used car a few months ago. i think the situation has worsened since then. dealerships are out there calling people making offers on their cars because used car inventory is so low. we went to like 5 different dealers who all were playing retarded games with the their fees (list car for x price, you get there are their "documentation fee" is like $3000). i got into a shouting match with the owner of one dealership that was trying to pull that shit. the place we eventually got the car from i started asking about price and he basically laughed in my face. he was like "you're from X and drove all the way to Y (about 60 miles away). we've got this priced to sell, it'll sell tomorrow if you don't buy it. take it or leave it". he was right and we did.

new cars are basically the same right now, i hear. lots of places are getting way over sticker. your only hope is to go around town and compare prices. tell the dealer you're comparing prices and looking at other dealers. that's the only way for them to take you seriously and give you their absolutely best price.

during ordinary times: basically the same thing. go to multiple dealers and compare prices. tell them you're comparing prices and you want the best deal. during ordinary times these guys will get desperate. they have quotas and managers that will grill them on why they didn't make a sale. take your time, play multiple dealers off of each other, and be patient.

you generally have three things you're going to be negotiating: the car price, your trade in, and financing. all of these things matter to the dealer. they get money when the car is financed through their bank. use this to your advantage. all of these have to be negotiated simultaneously. you don't want to negotiate a good price on a car only for him to hit you with a shitty price on the trade in, and then him saying "oh well that price was based on this trade in etc."

these guys are generally retards and they're used to dealing with retards. you need to lay your dick down quickly and let them know you're not stupid and don't try their little tricks. the most common is the financing game. every dealer is always going to try to steer you towards talking about your monthly payment. proles fall for this all the time, because all they are thinking about is how much they're going to be paying a month. so the dealer puts them on 84 month 8% interest financing and tack on a bunch of fees and the dealer makes out like a bandit and the prole is happy because their monthly payment is low. i think xo is generally too smart to ever fall for this, but in case you're not: DON'T FUCKING DO IT. don't even THINK about monthly payments. if you're not a fucking poor then you should be able to afford whatever the monthly payment is.

all you need to be concerned about is price you're paying for the call all in, price you're getting for the trade in, APR and loan length. all of these levers have different advantages to the dealer. maybe they'll give you a better price on the car if you use their financing. you should be walking in preapproval from your bank so you have something to negotiate with too. most dealers are making most of their money on financing.

just don't forget that these people are retards and used to dealing with gullible retards and are going to assume you are a gullible retard. you should be able to quickly demonstrate you know way more about finance than them and are way smarter than them, and get them to play ball fairly.

again, most of this advice is for normal times. right now i think most dealers will laugh in your face and say "haha ur fucked" and not negotiate much. all you can do is go to multiple dealers and ask them their best price. they'll start emailing and calling you constantly. just lie and say "hey i gotta a better price at a different dealership for the same car, going with them". this will cause them to panic and give you their absolute lowest price. however, because inventory is so low and demand is so high this tactic is not as effective. lots of places are just going to be like "wow that's a good deal, good job and good luck!"

The financing thing is a huge flame as is premium whatever. Gay as fuck cuz.

This has all been a lot more stressful than it should be because I'm not really open to buying used and even when I go to any dealership I have to wait for 30 mins to an hour to actually speak to a salesman. Fucking pathetic bro.

I should have just ordered a Tesla months ago when I was thinking about it. Elon is like raising prices apparently? Don't remember these cars being as expensive five years ago

it's to your advantage that they don't know who you're dealing with. they will collude with each other. plus you can lie. salesmen move between dealerships frequently and all the good ones know each other.

"another dealer offered me x"

"no way, that's a crazy deal. let me see it"

"he told me he'd get in trouble if it got out. i'm going there tomorrow to close on it, just wanted to give you an opportunity to match or beat it since i really enjoyed working with you. it doesn't sound like you can. i'll give you a ring if falls through, but otherwise i'm going with this"

"WAIT WAIT, ok, let me see what the BEST I can do is..."

it's actually a lot of fun if you like negotiating. i don't find it stressful at all.

however, that was in the before times. now it's complete flame and the power dynamics have shifted. and my car is about to blow up. i really hope it lasts until things get back to normal. i don't want to be buying in this climate.

I've only bought one new car and I absolutely hated having payments, so I sold it and went back to buying cars for $7k cash. My strategy is to rate the seller as much as the car. If they live in a nice place and have owned the vehicle since new, they likely took care of it. Proles who live in apartments, single moms, multiple owner vehicles, and the like are likely to have forgone oil changes when money's low or they simply don't have the knowledge to keep up with regular maintenance.

You'll have better luck negotiating a higher price for the trade-in than you will for the new car. I think the salesman's incentives encourage this, too.

Don’t think this works in the current climate, but you email all the dealerships and pit their internet sales guys against each other. Never walk into the dealership. When you finally get the lowest price that no one else will match or beat, you email the guy with the lowest price, say you’re close to buying, but would come in and sign right now if they threw in x (whatever accessories you’d like, like weather mats or whatever). When he says yes, you come in and get the car.

Has this worked since the year 2000? Just use email! They receive hundreds of those emails and don't give one shit because they know you aren't a committed customer like someone walking into their store. I don't think dealerships even reply with a response to these anymore.

Bad advice. Every dealership has an internet sales guy who gets sales this way. I used this tactic in 2018 and again in 2019. But to each their own.

Pay 10k over MSRP. Write a love letter explaining how much the vehicle would mean to your growing family.

Question -

Is it worth it to trade in your car to a dealer right now? They are offering 1.9% financing. Inflation is fucking 8%.

Why not sell to Carvana and put that money in the market?

sometimes its worth it because when you trade in you are decreasing your purchase price and tax you pay. do the math on the difference
