it's a very low iq take to think that this is a "guidance" on masculinity. it's exactly the opposite of that. baldwin's character is not someone that the play or film is encouraging you to emulate. it's exactly the opposite.

most low iq sales guys see this as some sort of roadmap. the same way to low iq wallstreet people look at gordon gekko as a role model. they're completely missing the point.

it's only low iq and prole if you take it as guidance and positive. but it's not that, it's the opposite. if you actually get what the film is about the speech is enthralling and high iq.

the fact that many people want to emulate baldwin's character and completely misses the point just demonstrates how high-iq it is. it subversive, and when the people and institutions it's criticizing take the bait, it just demonstrates how subversive it is.

It's all proles, all the way down. It's proles at a terrible Chinese restaurant, it's prole with an awful coffee pot, it's a prole middle manager who's the "boss" calling in Alec Baldwin. One veneer is the illusion of some hierarchy when it's just the same awful proledom all the way down.

You then have to recognize that Alec Baldwin is prole, too. He's got a fancy watch and made $970,000, but pause for a moment. He makes that much money by futzing around on an awful night at some prole regional call center? Is that what the top man on the pyramid does? He does favors for Mitch and Murray? I guess so. I guess so.

So zoom out to the speech. The speech opens with a vamp, about all the waste of time that the salesmen do, but he's got a speech all canned, "Well I'm going anyway," repeating about "Let's talk about something important." And here's the most beta of all proles who gets interrupted pouring a cup of coffee. How can a man in a suit humiliate you pouring a cup of coffee? It just happened. It's the most banal, mundane fact of life, pouring a cup of coffee, and this guy just ruined your night, right form get and go.

Third prize is you're fired. The hammer drops in the speech that this guy is not some motivational speaker. The reality sets in that this job is getting worse by the second. As it is, the film opens with absolute panic and terror from the betas who can't make their prole sales, in their pathetic miserable little lives, and here's someone who's threatening to take it all away, which in a way *is* a mission of mercy, a mercy killing of this awful job, but no, that somehow only makes it worse. The antithesis of Stoicism in these men, they panic at losing the very things that are killing them.

Two hours! Can you? Can you? The altar call of the preacher reaches a fevered pitch now. The room is now silent as the men reflect on their own inability and the emptiness. Each rejoinder has been lambasted, the ineffective effete responses growing weaker with each step in the cadence as their bemused middle manager watches. A visualization of testicles is too much for Levene, as artificial as the visualization feels. It's a tangible reminder of the very thing he lacks in this moment.

So yes, it is one of the great speeches in cadence, scansion, alliteration, assonance. It is mimetic and Socratic.

It is for the men of another era. It is lost on you for this reason.
