Stalin basically never forgave them for that and generally held very long grudges. The collectivization of farming was disastrous and resulted in a huge famine (which, makes sense - take land away from the farmers and give it to some moronic bureaucrats and watch everything collapse). Many of the kulaks (original farm owners) were Ukrainian, so Stalin saw this as more Ukrainian resistance. So he made sure that those that starved were also overwhelmingly Ukrainian.
In reality, this isn't that different from when Zimbabwe kicked out white farmers and then famine set in. If you take away farms from the farmers and give it to random people because that makes you feel better, you'll probably end up starving. It doesn't really matter whether your motivation was Communism or racial justice or whatever. The result is the same. |
