Race to beat China to recover $100m US F-35 stealth fighter 2hrs ago
The U.S. faces a race to beat in recovering an F-35 stealth fighter that plunged into the South China Sea on Monday after what the Navy termed a 'landing mishap' aboard the USS Carl Vinson.
The pilot was forced to eject and seven military personnel in total were injured.
The $100m warplane, customised for naval operations, plunged overboard, the US 7th Fleet said - making it the second time in three months that an F-35 has been lost overboard.
'An F-35C Lightning II assigned to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, embarked aboard USS (CVN 70) had a landing mishap and impacted the flight deck and subsequently fell to the water during routine flight operations,' it said in a statement to .
'Impact to the flight deck was superficial and all equipment for flight operations is operational.'
It added that the aircraft carrier had been able to resume normal flight operations shortly after.
But it leaves the Navy with a complex salvage operation if it is avoid its most sophisticated warplane, crammed with futuristic technology, falling into Chinese hands.
The US Navy did not respond to follow-up questions about whether it had launched a salvage operation. |

Obviously it's not good and COVID has reduced the # of hours and sorties pilots are flying so currency and competency has declined which combined with the very complex nature of the F-35 could lead to higher mishap rate. It doesn't necessarily reflect a fundamental flaw with the aircraft. |

You have a very complex aircraft with pilots that are only flying their currency minimums and in some cases not flying mins and having to get waivers to maintain currency.

Unlike their Air Force counterparts, the jets appear covered in reddish-brown streaks and splotches over most of their upper surfaces, including the center fuselages, wings, and tail surfaces. In fact, the aircraft almost look as if they have a case of rust, which is not altogether unheard of for the Navy, but as with most things related to the F-35, the reality is likely much more complex.
After all, rust only affects ferrous metals like iron or steel and the F-35's largely composite airframe wouldn’t rust, although its RAM — which has already been through a couple of iterations — may very well show similar signs after significant exposure to the harsh saltwater environment. While what makes up the F-35's RAM — some of which is supposedly baked directly into the aircraft's skin panels themselves — is a closely guarded secret, Iron is a known ingredient of radar-absorbent coatings going back to the dawn of stealth technology. |
