Suicide Threats Spike on Reddit After Crypto Crash
Victims of the cryptocurrency crash are posting suicidal messages on a Reddit forum dedicated to the cryptocurrency Luna.
This week, Luna token crashed 99 percent as the TerraUSD stablecoin it was tethered to also imploded.
Prior to the crash, the coin was soaring above $115; it’s currently trading at 1 cent.
The downturn caused countless not-so-savvy investors to lose not only their gains, but their entire investments, with some claiming they lost their entire life savings on the speculative project.
Many took to Reddit’s r/TerraLuna board to discuss how they, or their friends were considering suicide in response to the nosedive.
“My ex-colleague attempted suicide,” one person wrote.
“For those considering suicide, here’s my story of attempted suicide,” another thread was titled.
“I lost over 450k usd, I cannot pay the bank. I will lose my home soon. I’ll become homeless. suicide is the only way out for me,” wrote another person.
“I lost all my life savings,” another Redditor wrote. “Had bought Luna at $85, not sure what to do.”
“I should’ve cashed out when it was $100, then I would have been up $25,000,” another user stated. “But I got greedy hoping to get more money so I can at least afford a downpayment for a house for my family. I guess no house and savings then.”
The suicide threats became so frequent that message board mods added a pinned post telling “everyone panicking” to reach out to “national help lines,” followed by a long list of phone numbers for suicide prevention hotlines.
The crash comes as stock and crypto markets have been rattled by inflation, with crypto’s biggest token Bitcoin plummeting over 28 percent over the last week.
