Most impactful thing you can do is buy a good grinder. Niche Zero would be a good pairing.

Next after that would be develop a consistent puck prep routine so you can dial in against as few variables as possible. IMO minimum process should be grind into portafilter (probably with a funnel/rim), do WDT, and tamp.

thanks i have to be honest while i love a good espresso i'm not a connoisseur, i really am just tired of spending $$$ on nespresso pods and was told that these machines can make drinks comparable to most coffee shops. with that in mind would the built-in grinder not be sufficient?

Depends on your palate I guess. I can’t imagine the espresso being good but if you’re accustomed to Starbucks or bury your coffee in milk/sugar/whatever you may like it just fine.

For all the hassle that making home espresso can be I wouldn’t get into it for less than a strong grinder and machine pairing and that probably means spending at least $1500-2000.

As it should. The one thing you should note is that the grinder is adjustable. We had to make the grinds significantly smaller to get it to brew just right. There are a bunch of guides on YouTube for everything for these machines.

Yeah, that means you need to set your grinds finer. IIRC, it should take 30-40 seconds for proper extraction. If it is taking less time than that then you need to set the grind finer.

Are you tamping it down? Also if you have a built in grinder, you need to let it grind, tamp it, then once you tamp it you have extra room so grind a bit more and tamp it again. That's what gets you the rich smooth expresso. The breville is amazing.

I can't imagine this being a "stupid purchase" if you regularly drink coffee/espresso. 2 people @ $5/drink /day = $10/day. It costs like $700. You break even in 70 days and the espresso it produces is just as good as pro places. I guess you use milk/espresso beans too. Let's make it 3 months even. An additional perk is that it is right there as you wake up. No need to go somewhere. As you're on your first morning call you can make a latte. Pretty 180.

I'm not saying it's a bad buy. I'm saying the difference between a $500 espresso machine and a $1500 isn't the quality of the coffree or anything, it's the quality and reliability of the pump inside the machine. Serviceable espresso machines can be bought used and kept essentially forever. It's all stainless steel, copper and rubber in there. It's also about pump design. You want rotary. These brevilles use vibratory design. That's why it sounds like an electric toothbrush when you use it.

How long is warranty? The fact that all these people even need Breville to service the machines it telling. In the rare event that you encounter difficulty with a rotary pump, you should be able to have a local fix it or do it yourself.

Those copper boilers take 15 minutes minimum to warm up. Breville takes, very literally, 3 to 5 seconds. Pair the Breville with a decent grinder as was said upthread and you've got yourself a great home setup.

We actually got one of those as well. When the Breville broke down and needed to get serviced we decided we needed a backup. It takes weeks to get the Breville serviced and no way I can function without coffee that long. I did not like the Jura. The expresso comes out watery and less smooth.

These are actually pretty good machines. My buddy has one and makes me lattes and shit all the time and they're always very good. He just uses good beans. The machine is pretty idiot proof you just need to tamp the shot.

Even the milk frother is designed for your average idiot to use and gets the milk to a very good consistency without having to know what you're doing like a typical steam wand.

No idea about longevity but he's had his for 3 years.

At my office we have a terra kaffe with is great for a full automatic but I think his breville makes better coffee.

You MUST use good fresh beans.

For longevity my first one lasted 5-6 years. We've dragged that thing all across the country so it's been pretty heavily abused over the years. I'm on my second now and we've had it for about a year.

Got one as a gift a while ago and I use it every day. It’s 180. I have a separate grinder and I use oatly oat milk with the steamer thing. Trick is to shake up the carton before you pour it into the metal cup thing to steam.

I just set it up tonight. What’s your cleaning routine? Do you actually run a shot of water before and after pulling espresso? Also the steamer will take some getting used to, I got a bunch of milk all over because I pulled out a little too much. But 180 I’ll try Oatly.

I never run a shot of water after pulling espresso. Just dump the grinds, run some water through the portafilter and you're ready to go again. I don't use the steamer at all - that's a weak point for the machine. The one time we sent it in for service was because the steamer died. My wife largely steams milk separately on the stovetop.

Interesting, thanks Fish. I'm not sure how much of my routine is unnecessary.

1. Run one cup shot (without grinds) to warm up portafilter.

2. Grind coffee, tamp, run shot.

3. Throw out grinds.

4. Run another shot without portafilter attached, then wipe down group head with a napkin/towel.

5. Rinse portafilter. Do you actually remove the filter basket or just a straight rinse with basket inserted?

It sounds like you do no part of #4? How often do you clean the group head, just through the tablets and descaling process? I did wonder if I was introducing napkin microfibers to the group head and how good that was for the machine.

TMF: Not necessary. Go straight to 2. 2 and 3 are good.

2. Grind coffee, tamp, run shot.

3. Throw out grinds.

4. Run another shot without portafilter attached, then wipe down group head with a napkin/towel.

TMF: Nope, skip that too.

5. Rinse portafilter. Do you actually remove the filter basket or just a straight rinse with basket inserted?

TMF: Nope, not necessary. Just run under some water for a few seconds.

It sounds like you do no part of #4? How often do you clean the group head, just through the tablets and descaling process? I did wonder if I was introducing napkin microfibers to the group head and how good that was for the machine.

TMF: I have the BES878 now and had the BES870 before. Both will tell you when you need to clean them. YouTube has good vids for both that will tell you exactly how to descale. It is really easy. You'll use one of the filters, put in the rubber stopper, put in a tablet and run the setting. Then it'll need 2-3 minutes and you'll be good.

Overall, this is a super easy machine to live with.

You should tamp twice, otherwise your shots come out watery. Grind until the portafilter is full, tamp and then you will have more space, grind a few more seconds and tamp again. I also put a pinch of ground vanilla right in the with ground beans but that's me.

Not at all, the prole solution is either McDonalds/DD coffee or a Mr. Coffee drip coffee machine. Or for MAX PROLE you can do instant coffee. All absolutely disgusting but cheap. A nice espresso machine that you use to make excellent espresso at home is the opposite of prole.
