after watching a bunch of videos and reading some guides. this helped me practice more effectively. there is a way to 'feel' the target from looking down the barrel and moving it slightly so that you can see the angles you are working with. this lets you pick the angle which looks 'flattest' and most direct, and then you can take your shot more effectively.

it has to be without a scope, since black powder hunting season in my area bans scopes. the idea is to make it more challenging by forcing you to get closer to the animal and take only the best shots you can achieve. but if you get better at no-scope aiming, you can expand your range back out beyond 100+ yards.

I've shot black powder muzzle-loaders before, they're nifty guns. How often do you shoot to feel that improvement?

i'm not someone with automatic coordination and finesse, so i usually need to try 'skill' activities several times before starting to understand their mechanics and adapting to them. i started getting a lot of improvement after c. 75 shots trying different slight adjustments to my technique. another 50, and i'm certainly getting somewhere.

it's more of a commitment because you have to reload between each trigger-pull and then clean the weapon ideally right after it cools down, within a couple hours of your last shot and before the powder residue can start eating away at the barrel.

also, i've used both 'real' black powder (goex) and black powder substitues, and i can't tell any huge difference. so i'm just using substitutes now because it is cheaper and not as explosive.

You're ahead of the curve because muzzle-loading rifles will be the only thing Yanks can legally buy in a decade

there are basically 3 big types of muzzleloader propellant these days - 'real' powder (which is getting pricier as suppliers gradually exit the market), substitutes like pyrodex (which looks and acts similar, but has additives to make it safer to store without blowing up accidentally), and then shotgun primers, which are banned in my state for black powder hunting (since they are basically cheating; you drop the primer into the barrel instead of actual powder).

since primers are out, i use BP substitutes. i still HAVE some real powder, in a heavy 'safety container' that can survive a blast without turning into shrapnel.
