IMHO Garland, who seems to have proven himself a died-in-the-wool leftist maniac (I don't care that he had eGOP friends), and also very smart, might have really made an impact on the court. It's not about votes - any idiot can just vote left team or right team every time and rely on clerks to make it sound smart - but you see how justices can really shape the court over time. Obviously Thomas has massively persuaded the conservative justices to agree (or at least acquiesce) with his legal philosophy, and this term you see what a difference Thomas has made on a historical level for the country.

Kagan has the potential to do this, unclear if she'll get the chance. Sotomayor isn't changing any minds, and if Jackson is going to be pushing this "I don't know what a woman is" schtick it doesn't look like she's moving the needle much either (only time will tell). Roberts is smart but has no backbone so he's just a ribbon in the wind.

Garland appears both smart and viciously leftist, he could have made some progress for team Satan. Keeping him off the Court has to be one of the great political victories the conservative wing of US politics has ever scored.

cr analysis

never trust these snakes until you see their beliefs shaping the way they wield power. that goes for Kav too - you’d never have thought him capable of overturning Roe based on his public persona (only female clerks, coached girls’ basketball team)

This is possible, it's also possible that he's MAF his lifelong ambition got dangled in front of him only to be snatched away, so now he's on a scorched earth path to get his revenge. AG is a far, far more political role than SCOTUS J.

He's as close to a Bolshevik Cheka AG as any we've ever had. He's running purely political prosecutions left and right. Hard to imagine he would have been a regular guy but for one major disappointment.

libs could have put way more pressure on to get garland out of committee, but they didn't because they were certain hilldawg was gonna win anyway.

libs could have codified roe in 2009, obama campaigned on it and had a supermajority. but they didn't because they were certain roe was settled law forever.

libs are never not getting hoisted by their own petard. their arrogance and confidence that reality has a liberal bias and that progressive policies are inevitable is often their undoing.

In 2009 there were maybe 52 votes in the senate to codify Roe and killing the filibuster was crazy talk. If they could’ve they definitely would’ve.

they certainly could have. there used to be a thing about a president coming in with a mandate and pressuring both parties to vote for his agenda.

they didn't do it because they don't really want to. and because it would cost too much political capital. obama's biggest accomplishment was the aca, which 90% of people don't even know what it does and didn't move the needle at all on their healthcare.

dems don't wield their power, because they want power for power's sake. they'd rather not pass anything than pass something that costs them some seats. also, many don't even want way they say and just say shit to get elected.

Given Garland's integrity with respect to the Hunter Biden corruption investigations, he's proven that he would have been the most insidious cancer ever to sit on scotus. I'll take someone who's too dumb to effectively wield her power over a bright sociopath any day
