Real estate, law, drop shipping, tech, generic sales jobs, etc. More importantly though there is an infinite amount of free resources on the internet that teach you almost everything about business, finance, sales, and people skills. 20 years ago access to good information about getting rich was very hard to come by. You had to know other rich people who could let you in on how the world really works. Now that shit is plastered all over the internet for anyone to read and learn.
If you took away my law license and all my money, I'd be a multimillionaire within a few years and I'd be back here posting the same thing.
I'm not posting this to be a jerk. I love all my XO, brothers. I'm just trying to make the point that we live in the easiest time in history for a normal person to become wealthy. It is really your opportunity to throw away.

He also lists a bunch of saturated fields, like everyday sales, that are empirically subject to power laws with respect to returns, and which are in all events fully subject to the microeconomics verity that competition drives marginal profit to zero.
The more realistic way to get rich is to find some accurate way of assessing your relative skills against the market, subject to information costs, and then hyperspecialize in the stuff that gives you an edge. (If you've got the angle, Peter Thiel's advice that you really want a monopoly of some sort, licit or illicit, is hard to beat.) For CSLG, this is doing minimax optimizations a la an Everquest server and sarging proles in the context of a sheisty PI practice in California. Others will have other skills that give them a comparative advantage.
As I've said before, I respect what CSLG does, but I'd not want to do it or want his life. I'm glad he's reached his goals, though. I doubt he could do what I do, since he's not wired that way, but that's OK, variety is the spice of life. |

Second, I think if you asked me 10-15 years ago about your OP, I wouldn’t agree but now I would. After seeing so many people grind and end up mediocre and others who aren’t even that bright succeed, I can say a lot of it comes down to risk taking and not willing to even try because it just seems too daunting. I wouldn’t characterize it as lazy so much as lack of appetite for change and uncertainty. And when you have a family esp, a lot is at stake. For example, I get recruiter calls all the time for what could be intriguing opportunities, perhaps some that may lead to multiples of millions. But it would require more work, less cushy lifestyle, some degree of financial risk and uncertainty, so I don’t do it. If I really had that fire in my belly, I bet I can make it.
I also sometimes think I would like to do something with real estate. I got our house together for rental, took photos, did listing etc and noticed on Zillow so many professional real estate listings where the agent doesn’t even bother to stage a property or use overexposed photos. And their listing lags for weeks while ours got rented in 3 days. It’s like, how do people not even put in basic effort. In a second career, I’d like to flip houses and I bet I’d be good at it. It’s just hard to know where to start but you’re right with all the resources I can really do it if I wanted to.
I was only taught the conventional path and I’d like my children to be a lot more entrepreneurial and have started early on their investment accounts and other things that I want to involve them at a young age. A traditional education is bs. Prestige is bs. My thinking has really changed on this stuff. |

1. Risk appetite doesn't always go in your favor. I'm a great example of that. Went to be a big expat in a country I'm closely connected to where in the decade past people who did what I did all became very wealthy. And just after I did the same thing - kaboom. All blew up. Good thing I didn't stick around waiting for things to get better because it never did. Had to do a fairly hard reset after that. So when you say "oh, you're just risk averse!" - yeah, maybe they are, but maybe that's helping them avoid serious problems in life.
2. Different people have different strengths and weaknesses. You're basically assuming that everyone is a natural salesman. Many people suck at sales. They're not lazy per se, maybe they work a ton. But they're not good with people. Even if they try to learn they will only be better than they were, they will never be the guy that's great with other people. You obviously are, and that's fundamental to who you are. Good for you. But not everyone is like that. |
