It's about as far from a joke as a country can get in this mediocre day and age. Meaning, there are a whole lot of people willing to fight and die for it. Which I seriously doubt most Americans would be willing to do for this country.

Before the war, I thought Ukraine was a corrupt joke and that Russia would occupy it easily. But they've proven me wrong with over 50,000 dead soldiers and a lot more to come presumably.

They are still very corrupt and will have to find a way to deal with that though. It's a post-Soviet thing.

Ukraine is at least 1500 years old, if you count by the city of Kyiv, bigot. Your OP is much like saying that Germany was artificially created by Bismarck, because "it was not a country" before that.

"Russia", OTOH, is an artificial country created by misguided educated Ukrainians, who adopted the Greek transcription of the second part of Kyiv-Rus, taught the local population, that lived in burrows at the time, how to read and write, and how to build above-ground structures, and then formed an artificial "Russian" language for them, which is a simplified Ukrainian adopted for the beastly heathens who could not pronounce melodic Ukrainian sounds. "Russian language" did not even exist before 300 years ago.
