Played a Hot Rod Deluxe tonight and it sounded and felt amazing. Apparently the Deluxe Reverb is even better. I love my Helix but the plain clean tone on these amps is insane.

I had a US made hot rod that I really regret selling. It sounds so beautiful and clear. The reverb sounds natural and awesome. You cam get a great overdrive tone too.

It's just really fucking loud. Honestly no reason to get it if you aren't playing in a band or don't plan to really crank it up at home. Maybe a blues Jr?

I am hardly the person to answer, but when I was in college I was a guitarmo who wanted a nice amp. Because I didn't have much money back then, this represented a significant expenditure and I accordingly thoroughly researched the matter. I ended up with the deluxe reverb and truly loved it for many years until it disappeared during a move. I just play acoustic these days but if I ever get one of my electrics out of the closet I will not hesitate to get another deluxe reverb.

Edit: Fuck, I think I actually had the twin reverb. My bad!

I have owned both. Deluxe reverb is better but like double price. I used a HRD for years. It is SO LOUD for a 1x12 and will keep up well at any bar gig. Very sturdy too and handles getting knocked around, beer spilling on it, etc. The reverb on both sound very good.

One thing about the HRD is that it really sounds best imo when it’s turned up to at least 3 or 4, but that is very LOUD (the volume increase is not linear), so if you’re only doing bedroom playing, you might want to get an attenuator.

Also, if you go for the HRD I would look for one with a vintage 30. Some people call them Ice picky but they’re the best imo.

Ty

I found a used reverb deluxe '68 reissue for like $200 more than the HRD.

The HRD sounded dreamy to me so I can't imagine how much better a reverb deluxe would be, but I read about the volume issues you talked about with the HRD and that's a factor for me for sure.

No. You gotta play both. Reverb is the classic black face fender tone. There is no drive channel, but when you crank the volume you will get some breakup a la SRV. It will distort faster than the HRD because it has lower headroom. The HRD has a dedicated drive channel but a TS-style pedal OD on the clean channel sounds much better imo.

Deluxe reverb is just a better, classic amp. HRD is a good amp but is more of a budget modern workhorse.

deluxe reverb is 180 especially if you crank it. never liked the hot rods myself.

if you want some vintage fender tones that dont have to be loud as hell to sound good look into this. sounds great way way better than any digital modeling https://www.quilterlabs.com/index.php/product/superblock-us/

Update - I can't even play this thing loud because I live in a condo building. But holy shit it's the perfect clean tone. I can play all day, and I sound better than my playing should be. It's downright magical and it can't even do overdrive.

I will literally own this amp for the rest of my life and pass it on in my will.
