This author not only harbors no hatred towards Africans, he not only engages them *as human beings*, he is fond of them.

Libs-da-real-raycists is terrible rhetoric, but it's true on this point. It is a virtue to be able to encounter a foreign people and to keep your eyes and mind as open as possible to receive who they are, how they behave, what is important to them, and to try to do so outside the categories of your own culture.

This was thought to be a liberal virtue when I was growing up and it mainly accounts for why I counted myself a lib in the 90s. I actually valued diversity, and enjoyed the thought of wildly different ways of being human. I thought encountering foreign cultures as merely defective domestic cultures was small-minded, flat, dumb, and vicious.

Its become apparent that is now the hallmark of shitlibbery: there is ONE way to be human (western, corporate, gay, feminist) and every single culture on earth better shape up.

This guy, obviously, knows African people in a way that a lib never could -- even if they too spent a few years living there. They would never actually *see* the Africans like he has.

In my optimistic moments, I hope that way of being an earthling returns and think it will. When you step foot in another culture, whether its Baltimore or Botswana or the Amazon or Mississippi or Martha's Vineyard, you can allow these people to be themselves, and accept that radically different approaches are appropriate.

Colonialism wrought anti-colonialism, and I hope an anti-shitlib approach to human cultures will swing just as hard.

For difficulty dealing with counterfactuals, it seems pretty clear that it would impact your ability to understand how your poor choices led to your current predicaments. Like proles who buy fancy cars and go into credit card debt not understanding how that leaves them continuously poor.

The impacts of inability to comprehend recursion isn’t as clear. Maybe it prevents you from being able to solve abstract problems at scale (which is definitely required for some jobs like in engineering or something).
