Date: September 26th, 2022 9:41 PM Author: Flesh Death Wish Sanctuary ok. admin is interesting. most don't care and i imagine it's more like having a normal job. hr people have standards to comply with and just want to get through the week without getting into trouble. there are some true believers in e.g. the provost's office, who will give you shit for classes you propose, but they're pretty removed. they just have particular ideas about what's trendy and want numbers to go up, generally. it's really profs more than anything. they have a vision of what they want their department to look like, ideologically as well as in terms of rigor/accomplishments, and if you don't fit it, they just don't want you. grad students are mostly idiots (as i was when i was a grad student), but there are occasionally footsoldiers for a cause among them. i had one weird stint as a grad student where there was another i was semi-friends with, and i knew he could tell there was something off about me. we would be all eating dinner and having beers, and he'd mention something about richard spencer or something and stare right into my eyes every single time. most don't do shit like that, but the few self-appointed gestapo that do make life awfully stressful. |
