You literally better be ready to spend your first year going to every lawyer happy hour, meeting as many people as you can, and kissing ass and taking out as many lawyers as you can for lunch. |

I would also attend every bar association event you can and kiss ass, take people out to lunch, etc

You go in asking about THEIR business, not yours. Tell them you are building your network and you anticipate needing people to refer to. My advice: figure out what practice area you want to go into. Get hired by a small firm that does it. Tell them you want to help generate business for the firm. They may pay for you to join some local groups, give you an expense account to take referral sources out to lunch, etc.
Do it for a year to learn the ropes of that practice area and build a network. Then go solo and let all of your new connections made on the old firm's dime know. |

Some of the advice here isn't great. Don't waste time socializing or networking with lawyers. The ones in your practice area will keep the good cases for themselves, the ones outside your practice area already have people to send shit to who aren't inexperienced.
Just network with non-lawyers as much as you can, non-stop. Hand out business cards, make friends, have a lot of hobbies, and get as extroverted as possible. Talk to every person you meet and then some. Always be selling yourself. Once you get clients, constantly sell to them too. They will be your biggest advocates.
I could move to a random city and start a new practice area and be making millions within a couple years, easily. I didn't know a single one of my good referral sources when I started law. |
