First part is their time in basic. It starts off lighthearted and is "funny" but slowly gets darker. The second half starts with their tour in Vietnam and is noticeably darker, and gets even darker as the movie moves along until it delves into hopelessness. Joker and Raptor Man want to see action, they see it and it makes them uncomfortable. It shows how much they and the other marines they encounter have changed. Raptor Man's first kill in Hue City before Bird is the Word starts playing. The "get some" guy. Animal Mother. And then it ends with the Mickey Mouse song - showing how ironic it is that they've changed from innocent boys to battle-hardened men.

Joker wears the pin to symbolize the duality of man but it's easy to wear a pin - it's another thing to experience the duality of man firsthand, which he does during his tour.

This is demonstrated repeatedly in the second half, whereas the first half only looks into the descent of Pyle into madness. The second half of the movie is where all of these themes become clear.

Still some good modern movies that have come out, they're just few and far between. The consolidation in the industry has incentivized studios to create movies that cater to the low IQ masses and are generally shitty. Art films, or films that make you think, used to be able to reach a wider audience through theatrical releases because 3 studios didn't dominate the industry.

The software driven movies are actually pretty expensive - look at the capeman shit - almost all CGI but very high budgets. Arthouse or indie films have smaller budgets but also smaller sales so the margins aren't there. Your first point is spot on - why take a chance on a new movie when you can make capeman 7 and rake in $500M profit worldwide.

Terrence Malik (he doesn't make many films but when he does they're the best this generation has to offer)

The Coen Brothers

Ari Aster

Andrew Dominik

David Mackenzie

Anything A24 does - almost all of their movies are original ideas with good scripts, phenomenal camerawork, and well-cast actors.

The film’s World War II backdrop underscores the message of conflict as an elemental part of life, something running much deeper than just guns and bombers. It is a very Heideggerian notion—that reality shapes itself through conflict and struggle. As Heidegger puts it, the world (humanity) and earth (physical nature) are in a constant and essential striving, opponents that raise each other into the self assertion of their natures.

Malick turns the philosophical concept into artistic exposition by showing how our existence is driven by conflicts between war and peace, darkness and light, love and strife, Paradise found and Paradise lost. It’s a film that is more interested in the fact that the world is governed by contrasts and conflicts, and less in the question of which side is right and which is wrong.

At the heart of the film is the notion that this warring tension is evidence of something other—some oneness and perfection just out of reach. It is perhaps what Chesterton deemed divine discontent—the happiness that comes from both loving and disdaining the world around us. If pure happiness is possible for man in this life, Chesterton says that it will be an exact and perilous balance; like that of a desperate romance. Happiness in life comes from the deepest longing for the other—for the filling of “the lack.”

We see through the inhumanity of battle in Thing Red Line that beyond the divisions of people and nations there is a common humanity that longs for that oneness and reconciliation which nature—in its beautiful brokenness—reflects.

It tells numerous stories through the invasion of Guadalcanal, though all of them circle back to the messages I described above. It's a common theme in Malik movies, he just did it brilliantly in Thin Red Line.

There's a very xo-like character - Captain Staros - an attorney who is afraid to take the hill because he knows he will lose men doing it. He makes some good points but at the end of the day it's clear he has no business leading soldiers in battle.

One of the points that Nick Nolte's character makes is that in a battle like Guadalcanal the winning side will be the one that is willing to send the most men into the slaughter.

"How many dead men are worth this hill, worth winning this war?" He makes a good point - if you want to win wars you have to be willing to send people you know to their deaths.

That's another major point about Nolte's character. I think he's a colonel (or lt colonel) but in the beginning he has a conversation with a younger general (Travolta'a character). Nolte's inner monologue talks about how he's waited all this time and has always been passed over. In battle he continually pushes his troops to advance, even without water, until Cusack's character (who Nolte likes and respects) finally gets him to send runners to get the troops water (Nolte tells Cusack he'll never understand what getting passed over time and time again feels like).

Nolte's character is interesting because it's a mix of (i) what must be done in order to succeed in battle, and (ii) the blindspot that results when one is trying to advance their career at all costs.
