This is not some woke contrarian question. Just seems there are other works of literature that are better suited to making most kids interested in reading and understanding text. Shakespeare requires a lot of translation despite yes being modern English.

No, the chances of hs kids getting anything out of Shakespeare is virtually nil. You should focus on ensuring they can read and teaching them to draft effective emails. Maybe a graphics novel for an AP class.

It’s worth doing to teach various concepts about poetry and theatre and give kids the cultural context of why Shakespeare is a significant figure in literature. But most of the benefits of it can be derived from reading like two excerpts over the span of three weeks in class v making kids slog through multiple entire plays that they won’t understand until it’s translated for them in class.

Learning Shakespeare in high school got me more interested in literature than anything else we studied. Not because of iambic pentameter or foreshadowing or irony or anything else that supposedly makes Shakespeare "great." I had a 180 high school English teacher who taught us that Shakespeare is actually full of dick jokes. Finding out that there were dirty double meanings to many famous Shakespeare passages made me want to read the entire canon.

Some of the evidence supporting the involvement of the phonological loop in sentence comprehension has emerged from reading comprehension and short-term memory studies involving concurrent task paradigms (e.g. Baddeley, 1981 ; Baddeley et al., 1975 ; Besner and Davelaar, 1982 ; Coltheart, 1993 ). For example, Baddeley (1981) asked subjects to detect word order errors in visually-presented sentences while performing one of two tasks concurrently. In one condition, subjects performed the error detection task during concurrent continual articulation of the word “the.” By engaging the phonological loop in the rehearsal of “the”, Baddeley hypothesized that the loop’s contribution to reading would be suppressed, and thus the extent of its involvement in reading could be determined. In the other concurrent task condition, subjects tapped one of their fingers, paced by a metronome. Performance in the word error detection task was significantly worse during concurrent articulation than during concurrent tapping, suggesting that the phonological loop contributes to reading processes.

Most books high school English teachers (skews heavily towards women, coincidentally) are middling novels like pride and prejudice or to kill a mockingbird. Not sure I got much from classes on Shakespeare, but some of the plays were the only assigned things I actually liked in English class. Wish there had been more real greats like Milton -- took me until undergrad to realize I actually like poetry.

Yeah. You can start even younger with some of the plays. The key is to go all in on teaching it. Simply assigning sections to read overnight and having bland discussions about themes or imagery won't cut it. You need to spend lots of time on individual scenes; do close readings of passages; really get the kids engaged in the story.

With a good teacher you can have 10 year olds into Shakespeare.

The whole focus on literature should be scrapped. Should focus on functional reading and writing like news articles, studies, memos, reports, research papers, briefs, correspondence etc. HS students are terrible at writing even letters or emails. Need to teach how to be concise and clear first. Then focus on functional topics like logical fallacies, canons of interpretation etc. rather than motifs, foreshadowing, realism, metaphors, irony.

Shakespeare is the greatest English writer and one of five greatest writers ever.

Yeah I think if you speak English and go to HS you should be taught Shakespeare before you are 18, lol

Your REAL problem is that many HS kids today should not be in HS but rather vocational

But the style of his English is nowhere close to how its used now either casually or formally. If you need a guide or "translation" then how relevant is it to read him.

The reason ole Billy Shakes as you pretentious fucks call him is even taught in schools is because a bunch of literary clubs at universities wanted to talk more about him instead of actual learning. It's like if college kids wanted to talk more about My Hero Academia than Trig so have a class where that's all they do. And high schools follow suit.

if you need a "guide" to read Shakespeare you are illiterate. It's Modern English.

Lol Good Ole Billy Shakes Panda Express claimed. Yes it's Modern English, but written in a style that has been outdated for centuries.

that's part of why it's worth studying in a class. You can read Harry Potter at home.

it's not completely different. Beowulf is completely different. French is completely different. Shakespeare is Modern English. If you dont understand the distinction you should not be offering your opinion on this topic

1) middle english (chaucer's english) is another language from either old english or any phase of modern language; just try reading it without a HEAVY (old/middle) german background

2) no one can agree on the dividing lines of where early modern english begins, when it spreads and becomes either spoken or literary, or when it transitions into modern english (read e.g. hobbes' leviathan and his translation of thucydides, seems like he's writing in separate phases that were developing or emerging proximate to his lifetime)

3) modern does not mean contemporary, the latter being what we speak; hence it's only on places like xo that you find people actually competently mimicking modern english for high-style, e.g. for threads about poasters engaging in 100% str8 man-on-man ass fucking

the finn is right on this very specific point, even if no where else in the thread

i thought about writing it earlier, but only came back when the subthread continued. these are more debated and complicated categories than you're presenting, so it does indeed address your category-based condescension.

its really not that hard to parse. I think our HS texts had a few footnotes per page, entirely on single vocab words. The syntax is just fancy, but so is the case with poetry. Its very good for the 95-115IQ brain to work around difficult diction and syntax.

I do remember we discovered a pun on CUNT in Hamlet and were very excited

What in the living fuck? When I think about shitty lit you read in HS I think of shit like Pride and Prejudice. Just incredibly boring and adds nothing. Shakespeare isn't remotely in that category. I also can't imagine a good English Lit course without Shakespeare.

ljl at all the proles itt talking about how its hard to read. Its meant to be acted out. They are plays. it loses its balls when you just sit in class and read it. For drama its still top shelf stuff.
