When Matt Rhule was officially announced as Nebraska’s 31st head football coach on Saturday, it was revealed that he had agreed to an eight-year contract with the Huskers.
However, the financial terms of that deal remained unknown.
According to a report from the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Sunday morning, the former Carolina Panthers coach will make $72 million – $9 million annually – over his eight years in Lincoln.

An interesting factor in hiring Rhule was what would happen to his massive buyout from the Panthers. The 47-year-old Rhule was fired in October after just over two seasons in Charlotte.
As Rapoport mentioned, Rhule was due $34 million from Carolina until he found another coaching job. Based on this report, Nebraska agreed to take on a substantial amount of that buyout to get the deal done.
Full details of Rhule’s new contract are expected to come on Monday afternoon. He is formally introduced during a press conference at the Hawks Championship Center at 1:30 p.m. CT.
