Insane that a 4090 costing $2500+ plays the same games as Xbox Series X

There's something wrong with your eyes, settings, or monitor. X Box hardware is very stripped down compared to a budget computer let alone one rocking a 4090. 4090 is a $$$cam but it's just overpriced, not bad.
The sweet spot is still the last gen graphics cards, by the way, lots of sales of the old stuff. Not as good as a 4090 but still better than a fucking x box.

There's a real argument that the ninth console generation (2020+) marks the point at which it really no longer makes sense to own a **high-end** PC (e: for purposes of gaming) given the ubiquity of games across consoles now. I'm struggling to think of a high-end title that you *can* play on PC but you *can't* play on either an Xbox or PS5. (By contrast, I can think of a decent number of such titles you can play on console but not PC; offering high-quality exclusives is still a sales driver especially for the Sony ecosystem and then obviously Nintendo.)
I think there's an argument to still own a PC in order to get access to interesting, niche, indie games that don't come out on console. But you don't need a 4090 to play any of the things that qualify for that. Put differently, getting a high-end PC in 2022 is more a statement of values than a statement about content access.

PC has by far the best library, especially with most of the "console exclusives" from all three companies now coming to PC. You can play Halo, God of War, and Triangle Strategy on the same machine.
You also neglect VR, which is where most of the high-end PC exclusive experiences are these days. Bad VR (like on consoles or a weak PC) is . . . bad, whereas no other gaming experience can compare to good VR on a high end PC.
Supposing we do ignore VR though, it could be conceded that nobody is really making AAA PC-only games anymore. But I don't see why anyone would pick a console to play multiplatform games other than being a poor, or too lazy to build a proper PC. The actual gaming experience ranges from a little better on PC, to dramatically better.
It might be true that one doesn't *need* a 4090 right now, but we are in one of the rare spots where GPUs have outrun the games available for them. There are only a handful of games (mostly ray-traced) where the 3090 could not already pull 4k60fps. The main benefits of the 4090 are in VR, where all that headroom show up in a much crisper image that dramatically helps immersion.

Depends on the size of your screen. 4090 can fill a bigger screen.
The most noticeable improvements will come with more powerful engines. The latest Unreal is pretty incredible, essentially rendering a movie in real time. Consoles are going to have a hard time keeping up.
