This is a lib talking point and unsurprisingly complete flame.
It's true that there's a wage cap for Social Security where you stop contributing and it's pretty low, like $160,000. But there's also a benefit cap, someone who really makes $160,000 will some day get the same benefit as someone who makes $300,000 and only pays SS tax on the $160,000.
But it's actually more insidious than that, because the benefit is progressive-- for every dollar you put in, you get less and after a couple of million dollars of lifetime taxed earnings you're basically giving money away. By contrast people who barely pay in because they have McJobs get an amazing return on social security.
The more money you make, the worse of a deal social security is for you, but the reality of the program is very obfuscated. It's one of the sneakier ways the masses have voted themselves the treasury. |
