My advice: broaden your search. Academia may not be right for you. You're obviously very smart and heady and need someone who can have a good conversation, but it doesn't necessarily have to be another pure nerd. Try to branch out. Flirt with the girl at the pizza shop.

Also approach: from what I know of you, you have some very powerful tools that women find attractive, especially your ability to listen and empathize. This is very attractive as most women are on their hands and knees begging men to take them seriously. You can turn this into a weapon of seduction by doing a little push-pull. Hit them with a feeling that makes them feel good, then take it away.

I think if you find the right woman, and you have the right approach, you can definitely find a catch.

I personally like to look a woman in the eye and get to know her IRL. As long as you're immediately attracted to them and can have a 5 minute conversation you can tell if you want to pursue them further. Way better than online dating. It sucks OKCupid is dead that was my thing back in the day. For me, I need to have a real connection to a woman to feel compelled to advance the interaction. It also gives them a chance to let their guard down because they can tell you're not a threat or a weirdo.

1. Quit drinking.

- you clearly can't just "tone it back" -- you need to quit.

- you self-evidently lack the control to do this without some sort of external accountability mechanism. Find one before you die of cirrhosis.

2. Evaluate why despondency over a woman has led you to this.

- you need to be a lot more resilient, and should develop some healthy coping mechanisms.

3. Get in good shape.

- physical discipline and mental resilience/self-control have a symbiotic relationship.

- you have almost certainly wreaked havoc on your body for the last several years and you should rectify that for your own sake 10 years from now.

- it's hard to be mentally healthy when you are in physical shambles. (Gut biome = brain health, endocrine health, etc.) If you're depressed, you should be exercising like a maniac.

4. Turn to your God.

- you Catholicism-poast plenty, but methinks that true belief is measured in how often you approach God with your problems. Knowing doctrine and actually believing it can probably be directly measured by time spent reading Scripture and praying. If you are in severe distress -- as it seems like you are, you should be praying about that a lot.

5. Make some goals that have nothing to do with women, and then plan out how to get them. You will be miserable without these. Men were made to chase things.

#2 is certainly something to reevaluate after 1 and 3 are handled.

#5 is something I can't answer for you. Professional or personal goals work here. Most of my short term ones are professional (in the army) and fitness, my medium term ones are professional (out of the army) and fitness, and long-term ones are all family. I can't answer those things for you, but you should consider what you want to achieve professionally, fitness-wise, whether there are things you want to see and do while you have time, and whether you're happy with your current level of independence.

You are running out of time to do all of this, and if you continue on your current trajectory you will be dead by 60 and wish you were dead long before then. You should feel significant urgency. Get to work.
