I think China ultimately blew their load too early. In a generation I think the scholarly conclusion will be that “bide your time and hide your strength” should’ve been pursued well into the 21st century, maybe until the 2050s or beyond. China’s real estate sector is going to experience the same thing America’s did in 2007, except China doesn’t own the money printer like the US does. It’s in debt to its eyeballs and infrastructure spending is wasted since they’ve built all they need to build. Manufacturing is being lost to Vietnam and India, and to reshoring and nearshoring done by the rich countries in the West. Manufacturing was supposed to be replacement by consumption/internal circulation, but good luck w/ that when +3 yrs later the country is still shut down over Covid and people’s #1 asset (their home) is losing value year-to-year.
China is fucked in the 2020s, imo. It’s possible Xi can save it, but I doubt it. There’s too many headwinds. |
