*i'll qualify this as 2-a-days as i recall them. it's entirely possible football today is kneecapped and the kids don't do as much pads + hits as we did. |

I played varsity ball in the 90s and our doubles lasted 4 weeks in the summer heat and were horrible. Full pads all day, wind sprints, constant hitting drills, locker room fights ranging from fair-one fist fights, to all out brawls.
also water breaks were for pussies, and a concussion was called "getting your bell rung" and you were expected back on the field immediately. This I'm sure has changed. |

They had a game where you have to shatter a beer bottle with a baseball from about 20-25 feet away. The bottles were spaced a foot or more apart, not stacked in a pyramid where they'd be easy to hit. We saw some Melvin try it with his family and completely humiliate himself. He was all over the place with an awkward, effiminate windup and throwing form, tossing balls way high or directly into the ground because he didn't understand when to let go, etc. He was getting pretty worked up and wanted to keep going and eventually his wife was like "no sweetie, it's ok." Definitely some tension.
My wife wanted me to try and I had no idea wtf was going to happen because I am in my early 40s, had not tried to throw a ball hard in more than 10 years, and had never played even "a little ball" to begin with. The last time I can even rember throwing a baseball was at the speed pitch booth at my high school graduation party. I think I topped out at 78.
Anyways, I grab the first ball, assuming that even if I hit a bottle, they're probably thick and the ball was just going to graze it or bounce off. So I just tried to throw straight and hard without aiming at anything. To my extreme surprise, I RIFLED it straight through a bottle, shattering the fuck out of it, and winning a small toy for my wife. |
