She tried to put herself in push-up position, both hands on one of his thighs, but her arms, their frailty barely concealed by a baggy hoodie, only made it half-way.

"Oh f... urgh"

A single belch emptied the contents of her stomach, some standard protein ration and orange juice, obtained at great price. Her arms gave way, but Lex caught her by the shoulders and gently propped her in an upright seating position.

"I'm... I-... sorry..."

Her head hung low, and spittle dropped down her chin. Lex took a quiet, slow inhale and was about to make some attempt at verbal consolation when the dormitory door hissed open. Lex looked up from the small pool of vomit in his lap towards the door. Gunner stood there, ration bag in hand, looking not at all pleased.

Gunner took a step forward, and the door hissed shut behind him.

"Had enough yet!" Gunner almost shouted, as if they were in a sprawling villa and not a studio apartment. Lex again took a breath, but Gunner answered the prelude with a verbal fugue: "I'm telling you, and I say this as a friend, not just your roommate: as your friend, this fantasy needs to stop. Just because you're in the philosophy department doesn't mean you have the liberty to entertain any idiotic fancy that pops in that boar's head of yours!"

Lex made another go at getting a breath in.

"No, don't even start. Don't even start! We're lucky we're not dead right now. We're lucky we live in an old-model building with thick enough walls to hide the scuffling of that... thing. We're lucky we're not wire-tapped, at least as far as we know. We're lucky we haven't had a random inspection. We have all these barrels on the revolver pointed at our head! And you still insist upon pulling the trigger! You won't even have the energy to pull the trigger at this rate! There's a week's salary in your lap! You..."

Gunner was now red in the face, and, having forgone breakfast for the past few days, was low on energy himself.

Lex finally made a complete respiration.

"Gunner, she's what they're looking for."

The red in Gunner's face, after taking a brief sabbatical, now returned.

"What they're look-- How about you look! Look at her face! Look at her hair! Look at her eyes! She's a Quant! And God forbid, Medalia finds out two grown Wordsmiths have, well, kidnapped one of their own children, no matter how useless, they're going to vaporize New Word City and salt the earth!"

"Gunner, watch."

Gunner, now firmly beyond words, did indeed watch with with continued consternation as Lex calmly walked across the dormitory to the sink, dripping vomit on the carpeted floor, and poured a glass of water. He brought it to the girl hunched on the couch.

"Here, little sips."

She followed his gentle instruction. After a few little sips, Lex, like a lecturer trying to keep the hall's attention before twiddling with a demonstration, said, "Gunner, watch. Kid. Shakespeare."

"N-number?"

Lex's normally cool complexion faltered for a moment, and he ran a hand through his prematurely silver hair. Gunner, his bluster giving way to sympathy, tried to let Lex down more easily this time.

"Look. Lex. She's clearly been broken. Whatever they did to her over there, whatever happened to her when she tried to flee here, whatever. She's been reset. She's operating at a primal level. Numbers is all she knows. Whatever you think you heard her say, it might as well have come from a lunatic. She's delirious, and if we don't, well..." Even Gunner faltered at the thought of what needed to happen to make this problem disappear.

"Number?" she said again, this time a little stronger.

"Fine. Seventeen."

Another little sip.

She took a deep breath, and Gunner prepared himself to see the rest of the dorm covered in puke. Then, in a voice so sonorous one would not imagine it could come from such a waif, she intoned:

"Who will believe my verse in time to come,

If it were filled with your most high deserts?

Though yet heaven knows it is but as a tomb

Which hides your life, and shows not half your parts.

If I could write the beauty of your eyes,

And in fresh numbers number all your graces,

The age to come would say 'This poet lies;

Such heavenly touches ne'er touched earthly faces.'

So should my papers, yellowed with their age,
