Modern ballet has moved way up the cost curve because of things like, just by way of example, biosynthetic trilineated floors (which are designed to prolong the careers of peak ballet dancers but at an extraordinary cost to manufacture over in Europe). Talent compensation is through the roof especially since COVID as demand for fine arts skyrocketed so you now will have dancers even in second-tier cities with seven-figure comp packages. Then there's the "luxury war" with young audiences demanding increasing levels of comfort and pomp--champagne stations in seats, alpaca throws in the "Veuve Club" at Koch, VVIP areas boasting celebrity chefs and nyotaimori. Finally, there are tech factors. Ballet commentators aren't doing this by eye anymore they have advanced camera tracking and replay systems to enable them to see things on the stage at almost any angle. Money is being poured on the pyre right now in the name of the "art" and it's consuming a lot of capital structures that were set up in an earlier era and not designed to handle this. I've been in the Skadden Suite at Koch for the NYCB and can give you an eye-witness account of it. Again, I'm not saying that the Madison ballet is doing this but in your truly elite ballet rings you are seeing this insane race to "amenitize" everything. And it's not any one thing -- if it were just the new flooring technology, or just the new viewing technology, or just the compensation packages etc. it might be manageable but it's like a tsunami of cost-prohibitive factors have hit global ballet companies all at once in the past three years and so they're doing what any sensible business would do which is increase prices to try to compensate. So far demand isn't waning so I think the message they're getting from the market is, if you will, "build it and they will come."
