the championship game is always a horrible atmosphere, almost always in some shitty neutral site dome full of neutral fans who got corporate tickets instead of drunk students and proles who have been drinking all day, can't hear the band if they're even there idk, played on a monday night

would be so much better if they didn't do the month break and every playoff game was at the higher seeds home stadium

And the transfer portal is horrendous. NIL would be fine if it weren’t for the transfer portal garbage. Mega conference stuff is terrible too.

+ The six conference champions that are positioned the highest in the top 25 rankings receive automatic berths to appear in the playoff.

+ The next six highest-ranked teams that are not conference champions will receive the next six at-large positions in the playoff.

+ The top four ranked conference champions receive a bye in the first-round of the playoff format.

+ First-round games are played on campus at the site of the higher-seeded team's home stadium: No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7, and No. 9 at No. 8.

It just means the last 4 games of the season for the top teams will be played in NFL stadiums with shifty environment. Meanwhile the actually exciting aspect of cfb, the on campus environments, will be relegated to exhibition status for top teams since they’ll just coast to the playoffs every year.

I think NIL is a good thing for the game and can keep players around for an extra year (e.g. Blake Corum coming back for UM). I don't really see a negative to it, though things are a bit wild-west right now (Lol at TAMU)

Portal is a net negative but you need to give kids some freedom to get out of a situation that sucks for them, especially the way coaches jump around every 3-4 years.

Megaconferences might kill the sport as we knew it (e.g. a sport with century old traditions largely driven by regional rivalries).

The NIL deals should require a three year min commitment. It’s such an obvious solution I don’t understand why it wasn’t implemented that way from the start (presumably the Wild West you mentioned, but it’s so lulzy to see schools sink hundreds of thousands of dollars and countless hours recruiting these kids only to have them bounce six months after they arrive on campus).

As NIL was drawn up, the deals are supposed to be directly between the kids and outside businesses. Schools shouldn't be paying these kids directly and they shouldn't be receiving any money until they arrive on campus and negotiate with local local business owners.

As it's happening now, though collectives (that operate as a quasi-university department) are offering recruits guaranteed money for simply showing up. Now it would certainly behoove these collectives to make their payments contingent on their recruits sticking around but that would be tough for NCAA to mandate. I think TAMU boosters are learning this the hard way.

It doesnt know what it is.

Its a minor league NFL wearing the skin of collegiate sport.

What percentage of players on ranked teams do you suppose would be in college in an alternate no-football universe?

There is at least one school with the money and power to destruct the artifice (though they wont). Notre Dame. It has all the brand power, and reason enough, because it can no longer win within this system.

ND needs to announce it is leaving the NCAA and returning to some kind of Ivy League model. Cease participating in NIL, cap coach's salary at level of highest paid professor, cap recruiting budget at olympic sport level, discard admission standards that are different for athletes than the student body. Emphasize student athletes.

Create a conference with other schools willing to do the same, and let the NCAA be the semi-pro league it is. Then lawyers representing NCAA players need to sue the NFL until it funds and takes financial responsibility for its minor league. The Dallas Cowboys Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama, etc.

yeah well you can't get everything you want.

frankly what I'd like is not to worry about national champs at all; it's fundamentally a regional sport and the goal is to win your conference and beat your rival. the laser focus on national rankings and playoff seeding is just another way of aping the NFL

It is regional, but you want your region to succeed against the others-or at least the SEC does. The move to mega conferences that span the country like the Big10 is doing will ruin that more than a playoff will.

ESPN is a very odd case, but “will die” seems like a poorly thought out thesis to me. They just managed to pwn Fox viciously over the last five years in terms of rights, and they really control CFB and the CFP moving forward. Fox’s staunchest allies are the new retard Pac 12 commissioner and the toothless Big 12 guy who will be presiding over his conference’s huge diminution in value between now and 2025. ESPN is held back mainly by being completely intertwined with cable and fundamentally built from and biased towards those companies, but as a result they haven’t even bothered to try in streaming. CFB eyeballs are literally the most valuable audience per capita in all content in the world, yet they’re still basically owned by the horse and buggy of cable sports broadcasting.

Disney just started bothering to work on ad-supported streaming and has a mandate from Wall Street to become profitable by next October. And yet in the midst of all of this, when their activist investors started clambering to spin off ESPN the embattled, soon-to-be-fired CEO got the activists to publicly apologize for their ignorance and publicly withdraw their call for the spin off. Cable is rapidly dying of course, but ESPN seems like the cash cow that Disney hasn’t even started to milk yet while they’ve been so consumed with Marvel, Star Wars, catching Netflix in subscribers, figuring out the parks during Covid, etc.

Full disclosure: I bought Disney when it got below 100 last summer and am delighted that they got Iger back (literal perfect person on the planet to run this ESPN play). I fully expect to make a min 50% return by early 2024 with decent shot at 2x upside.

It's not 1975, or even 2000. ND leaves and the game goes on like nothing happened. I agree with your other points. It's becoming more like college basketball. The schools that run their program like a semi-pro business dominate.

That was true 20 years ago, too, though. Mack Brown kept CEO-coaching until he had his own TV network. The main thing that’s changed in the last 20 years is streaming/cord-cutting and the emergence of CFB as the last gasp of broadcast cable.

You say this after the best week of semifinal games ever where College Football dominated TV ratings and beat out the NFL

For the first time in the 15-week-old 2022-23 television season, NFL programming did not top the prime-time ratings.

A College Football Playoff semifinal on ESPN, Georgia’s 42-41 victory over Ohio State on Saturday night, averaged 21.736 million viewers, the most among prime-time broadcast and cable programs, according to live-plus-same-day figures released by Nielsen Wednesday.

The audience for the game, whose outcome was not decided until Noah Ruggles missed a 50-yard field goal attempt with three seconds to play, was the largest for a prime-time College Football Playoff semifinal since the first year of the playoffs, when an average of 28.27 million viewers watched Ohio State’s 42-35 upset of top-ranked Alabama on New Year’s Day 2015.

Viewership was up 31.7% from the 16.506 million average for Georgia’s 34-11 victory over Michigan in the New Year’s Eve 2021 prime-time semifinal.

ESPN has televised the College Football Playoff semifinals and title game since its inception.

The close semi's were an anomaly though. Playoffs have been mostly blowouts. I was holding out hope that the championship game would be a close TCU upset. That would have injected some excitement into the game. Too much football power in too few teams and one conference.

This is true historically, but anyone who is paying attention sees what USC is building and how Bama is on its back foot and realizes there is change coming. Clemson having an automatic bid to the CFB and another elite QB is a major factor too. The Big Game is a play in game now and will be appointment viewing every thanksgiving. Think about how much more exciting/watched that Big 12 championship game this past year would’ve been with a 12 team playoff. 12 team makes the games in Nov and Dec more exciting and important bc more teams are still in play.

Only going to get worse with the SEC/BIG 10 arms race. Don’t see how ACC, PAC 12, and Big 12 teams compete when big10/SEC teams are getting 40-50 million more per year than them from tv deals. Over a 10 year period, South Carolina, Florida, and Kentucky will be 500 million ahead of their rivals financially.

Lol pretty sure U$C will be fine bro, as will Clemson with an annual CFP automatic bid. Recruits seem to think similarly, which is all that matters in CFP.

All that will matter is how much NIL money you can get. You have a lot more freedom to tell booster to give to the NIl fund instead of the build a new locker room fund with 500 million extra

USC is B10 property now.

ACC may still have some life in it if FSU can build on this year and Cristobal can turn things around at Miami. They have that weird grant of rights that will keep that conference in tact for another 7-8 years.

I understand, but I was reacting to the regionalism and entrenchment critique (which was very true of the four team playoff but will be decidedly less so now). West coast is alive and well and will stop sending all its best recruits to bama and the rest of the SEC/B1G industrial complex. Oregon Utah as an annual play in game seems like it will help the sport too.

Does anyone seriously believe TCU would’ve made the final in a 12 team format? Harbaugh needs to take his NFL money now bc he was exposed as a fraud coach last week. Compare the Deshaun Watson final or last year’s final. That’s what the championship game is much more likely to be with 12 teams.

I do think it could get ruined by becoming too corporate, even if it is more popular temporarily. NASCAR was saying the same thing until the corporate blandness caught up with it.

College football right up until January 1 is awesome. After that? I can't remember ever getting excited for these NC games held weeks after the regular season ends. Even the good games melt together. I guess the DeShaun Watson game when Clemson beat Bama was memorable, but otherwise no.

I was watching the intro to the game last night and they were showing 1982 Sugar Bowl highlights, old Rose Bowl highlights, etc. I was like, yeah, those games you remember.

I think the game is hurt by being dominated by the SEC. Back in the Bowl era you had great teams who normally didn't play each other face off. That was interesting.

Georgia playing Bama? Seen it already.

I agree with you on making fun of doodikoff though.

You really can separate the college football playoff from the rest of college football in general, the regular season and the bowls were great this year. Realistically I don't think most college football fans really care that much as to who the national champion is unless it happens to be their team. I care about as much about the national championship as I do about the Big Ten championship, which is basically not at all.

All I want is for Citadel to win the socon and South Carolina to win their bowl and maybe win the SEC one day. I really could care less about the outcome of TCU Georgia, I didn't bother to watch a second of the game.

Also, realistically, winning the SEC is basically de facto winning the national championship at this point anyways. Clempson threw a monkey wrench in there for a couple years but for the most part you win the SEC you can pretty much assume you're the best team in the land. There's at least one year in there that Alabama was able to win the N. Championship even though they were unable to win the SEC

Since 2006 thirteen of the seventeen national champs have been from the SEC

The other 4? Clemson x2, Florida State x1, and Ohio State x1

So basically 16/17 southern teams
