in my estimation the odds of needing a reload and surviving to that point are almost nonexistent, you literally can't find examples of it happening, meanwhile you can find hundreds and thousands of videos of some dood getting jumped and beat the fuck down, and in a close contact situation your micro 9 is almost certainly going to malfunction, and you are not clearing a jam while getting stomped in the face, so I'd rather have a revolver to shove into some dood's stomach and just pull the trigger

look, you don't get to decide if you're getting beat down or not, you aren't able to pull the gun until you are in serious trouble and in that situation, the opponent will easily be able to challenge you for the gun, real life isn't your set up training where you're specifically trying to not lose a fight, you're losing before a defensive situation starts

except the guy killing you is literally on top of you and sees you doing it and will probably not go along with it, look if I were a cop I'd have a glock, because I'd be pointing it at anybody who threatened me, but you have to consider that you may have already have been beat to fuck before you ever even know you need your gun as a civilian, your advice seems to boil down to "don't get your ass beat and you can still win"

No, my advice is "you will be able to draw a Glock just as well as a revolver when you're getting your ass beat"

Police are in fights all the time, from which they have to draw their weapons. They carry modern handguns. SOF carry handguns primarily as something to transition to in the event of getting in a fight, such that they are too close to use their primary or it gets taken from them. They carry modern handguns. If drawing the weapon and having it function in a fight were a serious problem, you'd still see revolvers in use some of those places. You don't. You are hyperbolizing the fuck out of some fudd idea you have about semiautos being unreliable when in actual use cases, they work.

you're ignoring my point entirely, yes with training you can avoid losing a fight badly enough and make use of a semi auto just fine, but to count on being able to do that as a civilian is retarded because you're going to have to have already been beaten to shit before you can even go for the gun, malfunctions absolutely do happen

meanwhile no civilian has ever needed a reload, probabilities matter

Absolutely, and for the 90% of gun owners who aren't going to put in the necessary work, a revolver is the best choice.

What a strange copout. Either train regularly with your firearm or its 100% useless? I've had my ass saved by a revolver and I don't train regularly. I guess I didn't get the message.

Police and military have different needs than a private citizen. The former can be expected to use their weapons offensively, the latter can expect entirely defensive use. Most people aren't going to train with their firearms, and certainly not to the point that they can reliably clear a jam in a high stress situation.

A revolver just works. And a hammerless revolver can be fired from a pocket, which is a huge advantage in some situations because it allows you to fire while your assailant is drawing his weapon.

People who don't train are wasting their time in the first place, and if you're planning to have a gun and never get good with it, revolvers are absolutely CR because it's not like you will be able to use either of them well anyway.

I'm giving advice for people who want to get good with a gun, not people who are planning to buy a gun, never train, and get fucked up regardless of what they're carrying.

Realistically, a 35 year old guy on XO who has never handled a gun isn't suddenly going to start training regularly at the range. Like 95% of gun owners, they're going to buy a gun, take it to the range once or twice, and never fire it again. For the 5% who are willing to train, semi automatics are often the better choice. For women and dudes who will never be anything more than gun noobs, revolvers are the better choice due to their simplicity and reliability.

which is why your advice is shit because even the people who are willing to brag on the internet about how much they train are 99% full of shit, it is exceptionally rare that someone has more than a basic proficiency, moreover having to "be good" just means you can't get into real trouble, like getting your ass whipped. Obv cr if you're in the military but that's exactly the situation a civilian should be concerned about, some dood just brains you with a brick and starts choking you out while blood runs into your eyes

I don't understand what you're trying to say about being good with a gun means you can't get in real trouble.

Every single scenario you come up with where somebody is getting curbstomped is going to have the same outcome regardless of what gun they have lol. If you're in a coma, you can't draw and you die. How the fuck do you think this supports getting a j frame instead of a Walther?

I think you're projecting; I know plenty of dudes who train. Do you have any idea how big practical shooting has gotten? You're certainly correct that more people should train, but none of that is responsive to whether revolvers are better for carry.

The mechanical simplicity of a revolver doesn't result in markedly different operational ease, except in cases of malfunctions which you radically overestimate. Failure to train with either platform will mean you're shit with it, probably can't draw in time for it to save your ass at any sort of close distance, and damn sure won't hit shit at distances farther than 10m. None of that changes based on platform.

Regardless of what you use, you should train with it. But if you have the time and discipline to train, you may as well use a semiauto.

10m is an absurd distance to worry about, for starters

and I am concerned about actual worst case scenarios, you cannot say with a straight face that some dood sitting on your chest while he pounds you cannot easily cause a ftf in any semi auto, it simply is the case that he can, idk how you can so fully fail to grasp that simple fact

I've seen a dude miss paper entirely at 5m with a pistol, so cr that 10m is too far to be worried about. One of the guns he used was a .38, so you'll forgive me for thinking his issue wasn't a lack of revolver.

Explain for me the scenario in which you can draw a gun of any sort with a guy sitting on your chest as he beats your face in. If your gun is already out, explain to me the scenario in which you still have it in your hand, and he's sitting on your chest. Have you ever been in a fight?

You seem concerned with inventing some reality where having a j frame instead of a Glock grants you a magical ability to draw despite getting bricked. Get real lol.

You may have missed my question, so I'll restate it: where are you storing this revolver that you can draw it with a guy on your chest? Inquiring minds want to know.

What you just said is fucking incoherent.

- "if you can get to it" in none of the scenarios you keep obsessing over are you going to get to a revolver more or less capably than a semiauto -- you're not getting to either of them.

- "you can get multiple rounds off ... 10 rounds will never ever matter" yeah, it won't solve anything to have more rounds for these untrained shooters you're concerned with, who won't be able to hit shit

- have you ever been in a fight? Serious question. If you're getting the fuck beat out of you like you seem certain will happen to you, you're probably not getting to a gun anyway. If you'd ever been in a one sided fight, you would immediately know this, but if somebody is on your chest putting their fist through your orbital, you can't fucking think, much less draw.

- "training doesn't solve things going to shit on you" cr, people who train regularly with their guns have no survivability advantage over someone who has never fired their gun befo- oh, wait, that's fucking retarded: you can train drawing and creating distance while firing, and you will hit more shots under stress with training.

How about the scenario where you limp wrist the firearm and it jams? How about the scenario where the slide contacts clothing and it jams? Where the ejection port is blocked? There are countless videos of semi automatics jamming. It happens far more than you think, especially to people who don't train regularly.

I've never once had a problem with limp wristing, but it's very easy for someone to fix if they do.

"contacts clothing" I have magduumped a Sig from inside a hoodie pocket and it didn't jam, you're being hyperbolic here.

"[what if] the ejection port is blocked?" incredibly rare scenario here, which I'll counter with an equally rare scenario: what if they need to return fire against an active shooter and they need more than six rounds? (I say this to illustrate that we can both pull out statistically near-impossible scenarios to defend something unrealistic.)

"countless videos" if you can link me to multiple videos of a guy dying because his semiauto jammed, I will flat concede that revolvers are better for people who don't regularly train. I'm asking in good faith, because to my knowledge this is not common at all.

I'd also be interested in footage of a gunfight where the ejection port was entirely covered, inducing a malfunction.

A lot more reps training trying to get a gun out while getting jumped than you've spent shooting at all. Half of our shoothouse work is just combatives and transitioning to a secondary weapon. Malfunctions are so much less common than you people think. The biggest takeaway for me has been that gun matters far less than training, especially under stress.

I agree getting jumped is more likely than a gunfight with the cartel; a semiauto is nonetheless a far better tool to address that.

And I'm not recommending anyone get a micro, to be clear -- micros/subcompacts largely suck. Just get a compact (Glock 19 sized) pistol and carry that. Way easier to shoot accurately and manipulate when under stress or in a fight. Micros are not the move, and if you need something that small, I'd pick a revolver too unless you are already a good shot.

False. All it takes is a limp wrist to cause jams. I've seen my mother jam a Glock 29 10mm, a Springfield XD9 9mm, and a Sig P250 .380 because of her weak grip. We finally replaced her semi auto with a revolver with critical Defense lite .38 special loads.

Cr. There are so many things that can cause a semi auto to jam. They're all unlikely, but it's infinitely more likely that your semi automatic jams as a result of poor form or environmental contact than it is that your revolver runs out of ammo.

Budget for each?

Generally:

- for CCW, get a compact striker fired pistol from Glock, Smith & Wesson (get an M&P 2.0, not a fucking Shield; shields are pieces of shit), CZ, HK, Walther, Shadow Systems, or Sig. All work reliably, it's a matter of preference at this point.

- for home defense, if you need something with range (e.g. you live somewhere other than a suburb, either rural or very urban), get an AR-15 from this list (ranked in order of quality, and therefore roughly by descending expense): http://www.autoadmit.com/thread.php?thread_id=4586578&mc=160&forum_id=2#41143621

- if you live in a suburb, look at a pistol caliber carbine -- that is, an AR chambered in 9mm. Any of the companies I list at that link are fine.

For a wide variety of uses, get a pistol and an AR with a berrel length between 11.5" and 14.5" with a decent optic (holosun 510 reflex is an affordable option with pretty good quality), a light (non-negotiable; inforce wml, cloud defense, modlite, surefire are all good buys) and an adjustable sling (Ferro, VTAC).

Get mags, get Adaptive Rifle and Practical Shooting Training, both by Ben Stoeger, dryfire consistently every day, and you'll start to get good.

S&W 340PD is ideal for concealed carry. It's dead simple and completely reliable. It's hammerless and can be fired from a pocket, meaning that you don't have to escalate a tense situation by drawing your weapon, but you've still got the drop on your assailant if it comes down to it.

Revolvers are best choice for most people when it comes to concealed carry. You may be asking "But what about capacity?!" It's not capacity you should be concerned with, it's reliability. Jams can and do happen, especially in high stress, dynamic situations, and unless you're training regularly, you're not going to have the muscle memory to reliably clear the jam and chamber the next round. A revolver works every time.

Federal agencies have spent billions researching this stuff and nobody employed by the govt uses a revolver. If you were correct then we'd be issuing revolvers to every military grunt as their sidearm instead of a Glock/Sig.

cr, civilians win gunfights without any offensive actions like killing the people attacking them

Using a gun is literally the definition of "the best defense is a good offense" hth

Yeah, if this thread has shown anything, it's that people who use guns for a living have no idea what they're doing, and that the MFE on this subject is a guy who thinks you can draw a gun with somebody on your chest pummeling you, or that carrying a revolver renders you immune to getting bricked

no, but people who use guns for a living don't have to wait to draw them, which is a pretty big deal, but I'm sure you'll be able to explain to a jury how you were able to repel your attacker, step back several paces and then put 15 rounds in him and it was totally cool

Actually, yeah. You're unwilling to accept the fact that most people aren't training regularly. Your advice consistently assumes that homeowners and civilians have the same needs and training regimen as special forces, which is completely retarded.

"same training as SF" fuck no dude, but you can dryfire 15 minutes a day and go to the range once Avery week (or two weeks if you're really pressed for ammo) and get pretty good within a year.

I also think that there's more overlap between their needs than you think, because basically the only times SOF guys use pistols is when they're in a fight and can't get to their carbine. There's significant overlap between that and a lot of scenarios for civilian defensive gun usage.

That said, if this is what you took away from my poasts, I'm not sure that me trying to spell it out more clearly is gonna help.

Lmao holy fucking shit. Do you know what percentage of gun owners dru fire for 15 minutes a day and go to the range once per week? It's less than 1 in 500, I can 100% guarantee you of that.

What do you recommend for the gun owners who will go to the range once and then never practice with their gun again?

Cr, not very many. That's an incredibly accessible benchmark though, and my point is that you're trying to make excuses for people who choose to suck by recommending an inferior platform, when they could just use a better one and get good with very little cost.

I recommend they fucking train instead of pretending they'll be able to do anything useful under stress with a gun they've never trained with (regardless of platform.

Military and police have different needs than the average guy off the street. The average guy off the street will use his firearm entirely defensively, while police and military use firearms offensively. Further, military and police train regularly to develop and maintain the necessary muscle memory to unholster from a level 3 retention holster, disengage safety, and clear jams. They're totally different use cases. For gun owners who are not going to train regularly - i.e. the majority - a revolver is the better choice due to their reliability and simplicity.

Actually, there's ample evidence that police undertrain.

A significant number of police shootings are defensive -- think attempting to restrain a suspect who then pulls a knife or gun, or a traffic stop where they get drawn on. Those have plenty of overlap with DGUs.

It's much easier to train to clear malfunction than I think you realize. Drill that shit with dummy rounds for a week and you'll have it pretty good, even under stress.

Most modern striker fired handguns, like those I mentioned, don't have safeties other than a trigger safety.

As an aside, no one needs level 3 retention lmao, you're gonna be fine with passive retention unless you're low crawling for 50m and then sprinting through thick brush.

lol, you're so disingenuous itt, your response to every downside is "just train more and that won't happen"

the question is, what are you left with when you fail and bad stuff is happening to you right now, in that case a revolver is definitely at an advantage, which is why to this day a shit ton of cops carry one as back up, because they know damn well they might be on the floor wrestling with their gun
